Excellent Source of Solved Calculus Problems

W. Michael Kelly has put together here a wonderful book of 1000 calculus problems including solutions. I think that including solutions is important for the student, because even if you manage to find the answer to a problem, by studying the solution, you may learn a different approach to solving the problem. Plus, having the solutions is important if you are learning this outside of a classroom, and don't have an instructor to consult with. Kelly has done a great job of providing easy to follow solutions to the problems. He even has call-outs in the margins to provide additional information.

The book is light on theory, so I recommend the book: The Calculus Lifesaver by Adrian Banner for the theory part The Calculus Lifesaver: All the Tools You Need to Excel at Calculus (Princeton Lifesaver Study Guides). This book can also be used as an adjunct to a school text to provide additional problems for practice. If you decide to use Banner's book for theory, I have put together a table to cross-reference the chapters in the books. Just read the theory part in the Lifesaver book, and then follow up with more problems in the Humongous book. I present the table below. (Sorry, it seems impossible to get a table to display properly in Amazon.)

Thorough step-by-step examples are best around

I am teaching AP Calculus AB for the first time, and still struggling to find the ideal text for my students. The Humongous Book of Calculus Problems comes closest. I really love this book, and use it as a reference all the time for my class. It is fantastic for the detailed pre-Calculus coverage, and for the complete, very thorough examples of each Calculus topic. The author starts with fairly simple problems, and gradually builds in complexity in manageable, logical increments. Plus, it's written in an entertaining manner, and is incredibly inexpensive. Alas, it is not perfect. Sheesh, what more do I want, you ask?

What would make it absolutely perfect would be if: 1) It really was a textbook, that is, if it added now-do-it-yourself exercises for students to practice each concept and 2) It clearly delineated AP Calculus AB vs. BC topics for the teacher who wants to focus on students passing the AP Calculus AB exam. For example, the solids of revolution chapter mixes examples requiring integration by parts with ones that don't require this technique. Solids of revolution by the disc method is an AB topic; integration by parts is BC and therefore a nicety, not a necessity, for my students.

Still, the best book I've found for the clarity of its examples.

Good book but there are better

This is a decent book. It will definitely help a student who likes to see problems worked out. I thought it was going to have problems for students to practice and then show the answers worked out. That format would have been more helpful. It starts with Pre-calc and it should state that somewhere since students who need pre-calc help, might find it useful to buy BEFORE calculus. I don't LOVE it because I feel that 5 steps to a 5 for AP Calc BC is a much better book, even if you are only taking Honors Calc, Regular Calc, or Calc AB. It gives better examples, more examples, and practice problems worked out. So even though this book says Humonguous Book of problems, it is a misnomer. Even though the AP Calc BC book suggests only someone in AP Calc BC could benefit from it, I would suggest that book over this one. FYI, I am a former Calculus professor and now I tutor students in all levels of mathematics, including Calc. Still, if the other book is not available, this is not a bad book and will help!

Understanding not just the history of evolution

This very thorough biography not only describes the often astonishing twists and turns to our developing understandings of evolution in the years after the publication of Origin of Species (even Huxley, an ingenius and dogged scientist himself--and "Darwin's bulldog"-- didn't seem to really quite "get" some fundamental implications of natural selection. Also fascinating is the history this book gives us of the invention of "scientist" as an honorable paid profession in Britain in the late 19th century. According to the book, Thomas Huxley stood at the center of that crusade (so to speak) to make science an essential part of education and our working lives. Even after reading numerous books about Darwin and related folk, I come away from this biography with a much, much deeper sense of the complexity and slow and often quirky progress with which science has advanced.

Thorough but flawed

While this is an extremely thorough and complete review of Huxley's life and work, I found several problems with the book. In brief, these include: A Hemingwayesque type of writing (short declaratory sentences) without H's style to pull it off. An overuse of adjectives by about a factor of three. Many sentences that, in spite of being short, were hard to disentangle grammatically. My most serious criticism of the content, though, is that the author stuck much too closely to a time-line rather than an idea or subject line. For example, he makes the statement, in several places, that finally Huxley saw the light and fully bought into evolution and natural selection as presented by Darwin. But he never seems to explain this: why the hesitancy and why the "sudden" conversion. There is too much mixing up of private life with scientific ideas. And no real counter is given to Huxley's antipathy to Owen whose work seems to be at least as long-lived as Huxley's (dinosaurs?). For my taste, a much more satisfying way of writing scientific biography can be found by reading Janet Browne's first vol. of a bio. of Darwin ("Coasting").

AN ENGAGING, DETAILED AND AUTHORITATIVE BIOGRAPHY OF "DARWIN'S BULLDOG"

Adrian Desmond is an excellent science writer (e.g., Darwin: The Life of a Tormented Evolutionist and The Ape's Reflexion). He wrote in the Introduction to this 1994 book, "'Huxley' is a contextual biography, for want of a better word: as often as not it looks up from street level to provide a fresh perspective on the people's scientist. At the outset my goal was to write it in a way that would humanize science and its history in order to make it accessible and interesting... it looks at evolution's use in order to understand the class, religious or political interests involved. It raises questions about new practices and new workplaces." (Pg. xiv)

He records, "Huxley sat in the pews of the cathedral. On Christmas Eve he watched the Catholic festivities, less with a sense of anthropological mission than with evangelical anger... The rationalist scorned this prostitution of human reason. To the young sailor priests and prostitutes were all of a piece, only standing on opposite sides of the sacred divide. At Mass the 'chanting' was 'of a most vile description.'" (Pg. 55)

Later, he adds, "For Huxley, the only way forward was a competitive, technocratic society, with the science professionals at the helm." (Pg. 211) He states, "Huxley's cadre was moving into power, but everywhere they met [Richard] Owen's imperious presence. What the scientific parvenus lacked in social strength they made up in moral posturing: hence Huxley's hallelujah, that finally 'the Lord hath given this Amalekite unto mine hands.'" (Pg. 231) He notes, "Huxley rallied Darwin... he sharpened his 'claws & beak' to tear at 'the curs which will bark and yelp'... Now Darwin was glad of it. Never one to enter the public fray, he needed a champion as Huxley needed a cause." (Pg. 260)

Of Huxley's famous encounter with bishop Wilberforce, Desmond records, "[Huxley] waited, stage-managing the event just as much. And when the shouts for him climaxed, he rose... [and said] 'If then, said I the question is put to me would I rather have a miserable ape for a grandfather or a man highly endowed by nature and possessed of great means of influence & yet who employs these faculties & that influence for the mere purpose of introducing ridicule into a grave scientific discussion, I unhesitatingly affirm my preference for the ape.' ... There followed inextinguishable laughter among the people, and they listened to the rest of my argument with the greatest attention." (Pg. 279) However, he admits, "Perceptions of the event differed so wildly that talk of a 'victor' is ridiculous... even Hooker thought that he had not managed to 'command the audience'..." (Pg. 280)

As far as Huxley's religious position was concerned, he wondered "What could he call himself? He was shifting power to an elite whose authority rested in right reasoning, not mythical realities... a cacaphony of voices proclaimed that they 'had attained a certain 'gnosis"'; like the second-century gnostics who professed sparks of divine knowledge. That night he came up with 'Agnostic.'" (Pg. 374) He adds, "Agnosticism helped Huxley elude his detractors. It presented the man of science as non-aligned; it deflected any inquest from his own axiomatic beliefs... And it allowed Huxley to take the offensive." (Pg. 389-390)

This excellent book will be of immense interest to anyone studying the origins of the evolutionary theory, and the debate concerning it.

This is THE book for serious bloggers!

If you are serious about blogging as a long term hobby or career and you want to know all the in's and out's then this is the book for you! I've bought and read over a dozen blogging books before and nothing was as informative and well written as this one. It is concise and to the point. Really, I could have skipped all those other books and just read this one. It thoroughly explains topics like credibility, legal jargon, connecting with brands, creating readership, managing social networks, building buzz about your blog, advertising, creating a rate card, getting into fashion week, what topics to write about, etc.

I think this book is far better than the others I've read because;
1. It is short and to the point which keeps your interest

2. It is arranged very well with a lot of helpful category headings so you can quickly reference sections

3. She covers monetary topics that no other book I have seen covers AND she covers them very well

4. She writes under the assumption that you already know how to use the internet and have some understanding of blogging and social networks, which if you are interested in blogging you probably do. So many other books are glorified tutorials on how to use the internet. It is as if they are written for people who have never even turned on a computer before. I don't need to read 100+ pages walking me through in painful detail how to create a blog on BlogSpot, it is self explanatory. Yuli knows her audience, accurately assumes most of their backgrounds with tech and the internet, and does not speak down to them.

5. It helps you create a blogging plan you can feel confident about and stick to it.

In short, if you are getting a book on blogging, want to spruce up your current blog, or make blogging a profitable use of your time get this book! You can skip the rest.

The bible for bloggers!

I just finished reading this book, which only took me a few shorts hours and I loved it. As a fashion blogger myself, I found it so helpful.

Get your highlighters and pens ready! Yuli gives great tactical advice for bloggers. I found myself marking up the pages with lots of notes. She provides her insider knowledge that she has gain after years of experience. I especially found the Fashion Week section helpful because she explained how to approach them if your registration gets declined at first. It is possible to get in!

She interviews success stories such as Gala Darling and What I Wore. I love how she pointed out that we (bloggers) are all in this together. When you work with brands or go to Fashion Week, remember you are still representing all bloggers. So if they have a bad experience with you, they'll assume all bloggers are unprofessional. And yes most still think we work in our pajamas.

If you are serious about blogging then this book should be your bible. Are you going to pick up this book? You better!

Deliciously sexy shorter read!

Second book in this wonderful 'Plus Size Romance' series of individual stories.

I love the characters in this series. Cherry is a deliciously curvy interlude to police veteran Zane's day. Rear ending his car was just about the best thing Cherry could have done for him and for her. Thinking her curves are unattractive to most men, and that her virginity is a burden, she's about to settle for her creepy and violent ice cream parlour boss as her lover of choice, until the sexy Zane makes his move and drags her off to the police station. Phwarrr! A wonderful love story about a real man (a man who likes his lady just the way she is) and a beautiful woman (curves and all) ensues. I loved the way Zane stormed into the icecream parlour to claim his woman...so romantic!

These shorter stories are not slim on character developement or on scene setting. They wind a fabulously intricate tale into a small package that leaves you desperate for more. Highly recommend for an hour's brilliant entertainment.

This is the second big girl book I've read from this author and I loved it. My only complaint is that it was to short. Must read! Cherry is so fun and spacey. Love the clairvoyant friend.

How disappointing!

Oy. I liked the first book but not this one. Way too rushed and Cherry's thinking was just crazy! What the hell! Then Zane...he's 40 years old and instantly falls in love with her? I dont buy it. Then when he tries to be all noble about taking her virginity he ends up taking it in a storage room where she used to work/live at the ice cream parlor on a crappy mattress because she was freaking impatient and immature and has a cockeyed way of thinking about things. Then of COURSE she gets pregnant because they are too stupid to use protection. LOL. I think the most entertaining part was her little Mexican friend with the dream premonitions. She cracked me up. Gabriella I think was her name. This was way far fetched and didnt come together well at all. I really disliked Cherry. These 2 people have no business being together at all. They have nothing in common and there is NO emotional connection. I sure as heck didnt feel it. Sexual chemistry a little yes but thats about it.

Great Book For Young Girls

With rich illustrations and descriptions, this book captures the attention and sparks the imagination of young girls. The Thea Stilton series is a fast paced and exciting series, and this book is no exception. It has an easy mystery just like in other books, but it has a little more action adventure and more of Thea. I think this book is well worth the buy. The only thing I could point out that I don't like is it doesn't have as much cultural history and trivia tidbits as in other books, since it takes place in America. However, they make up for it by incorporating some Egyptian mythology, so that was an interesting twist. Overall, I recommend this book, along with the entire series, because it entertains, educates, and encourages creativity.

Great series for kids.

My nine year old daughter loves this series and all the Geronimo Stilton books. She reads them over and over again! Though some of the words are mouse lingo, the story lines are great and kids get a glimpse of things about the world outside of their immediate environment. This book for example talks about the NYC Marathon which prompted my daughter to ask questions.
