DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND FIXED

This very boring book is more for a security professional to have on his or her desk as a reference rather than a study tool for the CISSP exam. There is a LOT of material in it that you don't need to know for the exam. For example, DR is gone over in painstaking detail. That's fine, but the CISSP exam is a mile wide/inch deep, so you will end up wasting a lot of studying time. Also there is a lot of redundancy throughout the book so more wasted studying time.

My main beef with the book is that it's unnecessarily wordy and highbrow. Here's an example.

"Specifically, what the security architect needs to accomplish through the investment of this time is to gain a better understanding of the usage scenarios that each stakeholder brings to the system in question and what the intricacies of those scenarios are in order to perform a risk analysis against them, and as a result, he or she will gain a better understanding of the powerful threats and vulnerabilities to be addressed as part of any defenses that may be planned and implemented".

Good gawd, I almost fell asleep while typing that out. That sentence could easily be cut in half.

Here's another example.

"Several common methods of cryptography exist including stream-based and block ciphers. The information security professional must have a basic understanding of both to ensure further understanding of encryption implementations."

The second sentence is unnecessary. It just adds weight to the book.There are a ton of sentences like that all throughout the book.

One more.

"Computers are inherently designed for predictability not randomness. Computers are so thoroughly deterministic that they have a hard time generating high-quality randomness. Therefore, special purpose built hardware and software called "random number generators," or RNG's, are needed for cryptography applications. The U.S. federal government provides recommendations on deterministic random number generators through the NIST. An international standard for random number generation suitable for cryptographic systems is sponsored by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO 18031. A rigorous statistical analysis of the output is often needed to have confidence in such RNG algorithms. A random number generator based solely on deterministic computation done solely by a computer cannot be regarded as a true random number generator sufficient in lack of predictability for cryptographic applications because its output is inherently predictable."

The last sentence is totally unnecessary. That was already stated in the first two sentences. I could give you many, many more examples but you get the picture.

The publisher must have wanted to get this book out quickly to capitalize on the new CISSP exam so they opted to skip proofreading.

Here's some proof for you.

"Iris scanning is the most accurate biometric technology."
"Retina scan devices are probably the most accurate biometric available today".

That's 4 points down the drain if I get a question on the exam about the most accurate biometric.

I especially love this one.

"Some areas to consider are actions such as planning for delivery of office supplies to the alternate site, setting up a package delivery account for the alternate site like UPS or Airborne...."

Airborne hasn't been around since 2003 when it got acquired by DHL.

Go with the latest Shon Harris book, she does a much better job of explaining the material. Although it doesn't reflect the new 8 domains, it still has everything you need to know to pass the latest CISSP exam, and you won't be bored to death.

I hope (ISC)2 puts out a revised version

After reading through the entire book, I am very disappointed with what I received for my money. The book appears as though it was put together in a hurry. I am missing 47 pages out of the middle of it (455 - 502), and there is a duplicate of the tail end of Domain 3 at the beginning of Domain 4. There are numerous spelling and grammatical errors, and one must hunt throughout the book to gather all of the information about a specific topic...as the index is extremely limited.

I am sending my copy back for a refund. I understand that (ISC)2 had to update the CBK, but they could have taken a little extra time for editing, or could have done a better job of planning ahead for a release that coincided with the April 2015 changes.

No sir, I don't like it.

Just to make sure there was one less copy of this book in existence, I put a few 5.56 rounds through it (see photos). I thought about selling it, but the fact that I took money from someone in exchange for this book would weigh too heavy on my conscious.

Would not recommend. Author rambles too much about unneeded information. I'm a very studious person, but this book is INCREDIBLY difficult to read. The author will often use a paragraph to convey superfluous information instead of writing one concise sentence.

***For example***

Dogs are often bigger than cats.

Vs

Dogs are often bigger than cats. Because of this, they require more food and water, as well as a larger living space. This results in increased costs and extra energy expenditure to facilitate an adequate living situation for the dogs. In some cases, dogs and cats are the same size. When this occurs, the maintenance expenditure is about the same for both dogs and cats.

I'm not joking or exaggerating about this example either.

As someone who is a member of Techexams and has studied for many IT certs and done thousands of practice questions, I can say the end-of-chapter questions are low quality as well. This book was obviously rushed and it's a shame because the cover is so beautiful.

Note to author/publishes/editors or whoever let this book reach the public: why would you do this? Is there a minimum page requirement issued by ISC2 or something?? If you're going to force a book to be 1400 pages, fill it with less trash and higher quality practice questions.

The shadow in Jungian psychology is the unconscious dumping ground for undesirable characteristics of personality. "Owning" the shadow--accepting it as part of one's self--is seen as the first step toward wholeness. Using examples from history, mythology, and religion, Johnson, author of Inner Work ( LJ 7/86) and Transformation ( LJ 8/91), offers a tour of the shadow, showing its origin and features, and demonstrating how and why it bursts into consciousness when least expected. Returning to the subject of his earlier work We ( LJ 2/1/84), the author reveals how experience of romantic love may lead to awareness of both positive and negative aspects of the shadow, and how integrating the shadow into one's personality can be a challenging religious experience. The point of unlimited possibility

This was the first book by Johnson I read, though my mentors and teachers spoke of him often. The information about the mandorla was particularly helpful, giving a visual and archetypical model for holding the energy of the apparently opposite forces in a space of new possibility.

Johnson writes that if I can be with the opposites, at the point of their intersection and stay with my conflicting thoughts and impulses long enough, the two will teach each other something and produce an insight that serves both... produce something utterly new instead of win, lose or compromise.

The key appears to be that every real solution has to grow from the unique situation I face. Formulas, how-to's, devices and processes can never be enough in such moments. Referring to my own past for an experiential reference or to another's experience or advice can't do it, either, because it prevents or sidetracks the point of unlimited potential that wants to appear in and emerge out of each unique encounter.

I liked what Maria had to say in her post: "Meet your shadow", dated November 22, 2003. She said she gave it only 4 stars because he doesn't tell how to DO that is described as possible in the book... I felt a little of that, too. And I have since appreciated the blessing of not being told how until I've done a bit of my own struggle with my own opposites in many life situations.

A book I found to be a perfect companion to this one is "I of the Storm - Embracing Conflict, Creating Peace", by Gary Simmons. I highly recommend it in addition to this book. It addresses some of the questions I felt about the nature of conflict after finishing Owning Your Own Shadow, in a way that shed light into my life. I am very appreciative of both books.

I am currently ordering from amazon all the books by Robert A.Johnson, so this was the next one. This is a good general axplanation of the jungian concept of shadow illustrated, as it is usual in Johnson, with examples of western literature and art in general. The explanation of the mandorla (a typically mediaeval figure representing two circles that overlap, and that symbolizes the union of the opposites or paradox) is especially interesting. However, I have to give this book 4 stars because, after insisting so much on the importance of examining our shadow, honouring our shadow and balancing ego and shadow, he never gives a clue of how we can do do this.

Excellent story-like introduction to the Shadow archetype

I have read Robert Johnson's autobiography, and have recently become intrigued by the concept of a "Shadow", so I looked forward to reading Robert's own thoughts on this particular archetype. I wasn't disappointed. The writing style is story-like, unfolding slowly right up until the conclusion. The only disappointment was the section on the Shadow in romantic relationships, which I don't think was covered particularly extensively. Nevertheless, the book was full of wisdom and insights into the role of the Shadow in our lives, and hammered home the important message that this archetype needs to be integrated into, not rejected from, our lives if we are to live holistically.

Even those highest in the councils of “The Custodians of The Scroll,” are unable to trace the Teaching, in an unbroken direct line, further back than the time of Pythagoras (about 500 b. c.), and a little later in Ancient Greece, although they find many references to, and extracts from, the teachings of ancient Egypt and Chaldea, which serve to show that the Pythagorean and Ancient Grecian Arcane Schools were founded on occult instruction still more remote, received in a direct line of succession of teachers and pupils extending over centuries. Investigators have found traces of the Arcane Teaching in the records of Persia and Medea, and it is believed that the inspiration for the original philosophical teaching (not the religion or the pessimism, however) of Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, was received from Arcane sources. Traces are also to be found in the Hebrew Esoteric Teachings of the “Kabbalah” and the “Zohar.” The Grecian Arcane Teaching was undoubtedly obtained directly from Egyptian sources through Pythagoras, the relation between the early Grecian teaching and philosophies, and the older school of old Egypt, being very close and intimate. Pythagoras is known to have received instruction from Egyptian and Persian hierophants. Besides the traditions of the Arcanes, there is to be found the closest resemblance between the ancient Grecian teachings, and those of the Egyptian Esoteric Fraternities. Some of the Teachers, however, hold that the Grecian and Egyptian schools, respectively, were but two separate off shoots of an original and older Teaching which had its origin in the lost continent of Atlantis. There are many Arcane traditions connecting the Teaching with Atlantis, and it is possible that both Egypt and Greece received it from this common source, instead of Greece being indebted to Egypt for the line of transmission. But, be this as it may, it is a fact that all of the traces of teaching that the various occult schools gather from the traditions, scraps of doctrine, and legends regarding Atlantis can be reconciled with the Grecian Arcane Teaching.”

I can't tell you how long I've been looking for a book like this. I have studied Occult Sciences for well over a decade. Much to my chagrin I have been unable to find anything that is as comprehensive and clear to understand as this volume right here. My advice is to Stop Searching and Start Reading!

Although I consider this is Supreme work, he also writes under the pseudoname of Yogi Ramacharaka and I would most highly recommend you search for all works under that name as well.

Top-Tier Graphic Novel

Midnight Nation (inexplicably labeled as Vol. 1, as I don't think there was ever any intention of continuing the story) is an outstanding graphic novel. The art is very good throughout with some memorable images that support the story. But this is really Straczynski's show. As a die-never fan of Babylon 5, I'm happy to follow JMS wherever he'll take me. Though he can at times be a bit wordier than need be—and there's a certain plot point that recalls Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, as well as an aspect of B5—I love his rhythms, sense of humor, and, most of all, his ability to evoke real emotion.

The premise requires a bit of acceptance on the reader's part, but if you give yourself over to some of the far-fetched aspects (even for sci-fi), the reward in the conclusion is well worth it. I didn't think I had connected with the characters to any large degree as the story progressed, but the payoff at the end revealed that these characters really do have an unexpected depth.

The only thing I wish they'd done differently in assembling this collection was if they'd presented the cover images for each issue/chapter in their original location, rather than gathering them at the back of the book. On the one hand, I see why they wanted to keep the story flowing as one continuous story. On the other hand, it felt like reading a novel with the chapter titles deleted. A brief pause to admire the cover art at each break would have been a little better. Nevertheless, this is a great story, well told, with adult themes, intelligence, and wit. It's a great use of the graphic novel format, and I highly recommend it for fans of the genre.

Wow! What an excellently written story.

I was surfing the internet and came across a site that mentioned Midnight Nation as one of the best graphic novels ever written. I came to Amazon and read strong recommendations from other reviewers. I ordered Midnight Nation. I finished it quickly in one sitting.

The story is immediately relatable (one can immediately relate to the story?) and the artwork was impressive in a non-distracting way. It is thought provoking, and the main character is, I feel, an excellent place holder for the reader, allowing the themes in the story to become more important and relevant on a personal level.

Even though I'm very late to the game in regards to how long Midnight Nation has been available, I'll confidently say any time is a good time to pick these volumes up and give them a read.

If I had a complaint, and this is more of an observation, it would be that often times I felt that the story moved along in a jarring manner. This might be intentional, or I could have been reading through it so rapidly that I made it feel that way, but that did stand out to me.

A read to be desired.

It's really not uncommon for me to read an entire graphic novel in one sitting, or two or three. But largely that's due to the fact that there is a space of time that needs to be filled. I don't apply the same thinking to Midnight Nation; I didn't read this in one sitting because I had the time to, I did it because the book actually creates a desire to be read. I know, books don't create things, but one can certainly be inspired by something they read. So I'll say I was inspired to finish it.

It's honestly really hard to write about something so great without wanting to spill all the contents of its pages onto the screen. That's how good with it, I want to share it. When I was done reading it, I didn't really feel like I was OK with it being over... At all. Other customer reviews gave me an impression that this was going to be something I wanted, all wrapped up in one pretty package. I'll just try to keep the context simple.

If you like dense storylines that do not leave you with asking more questions than the ones answered, this is for you. If you have a soft spot for human compassion, and seeing the benefits of enforcing hope, this is for you. If you like to see protagonists overcome extreme adversity, not just externally but internally as well, this is for you. If you like it when your antagonist actually is someone that knows what they are talking about and makes you question the morals, methods, and ethics of the world around you, this is for you. If you like it when character stories aren't stagnant with literary decay, this is for you. If you like philosophical premises with a bit more than a tinge of religious context that isn't offensive, this is for you.

To sum it all up though. Straczynki has unveiled a marvel in this book, and has bought my attention from this day forward. This book is not for those that are interested only in the stereotypical protagonist that lives the simple life of putting the bad guy in jail, bad guy breaks out of jail, good guy puts bad guy back in jail, and then ponders over the implications of what has happened.

This book is thoroughly amazing, and I'm glad it's gotten the great ratings it deserves.
