On the stoop of their shared home, Dalia and Bashir began a rare friendship, forged in the aftermath of war and tested over the next thirty-five years in ways that neither could imagine on that summer day in 1967. Based on extensive research, and springing from his enormously resonant documentary that aired on NPR's Fresh Air in 1998, Sandy Tolan brings the Israeli-Palestinian conflict down to its most human level, suggesting that even amid the bleakest political realities there exist stories of hope and reconciliation.

The home is currently owned by Dalia, a Jewish woman whose family of Holocaust survivors emigrated from Bulgaria. But before Israel gained its independence in 1948, the house was owned by the Palestinian family of Bashir, who meets Dalia when he returns to see his family home after the Six-Day War of 1967. Journalist Tolan (Me & Hank) traces the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the parallel personal histories of Dalia and Bashir and their families—all refugees seeking a home. As Tolan takes the story forward, Dalia struggles with her Israeli identity, and Bashir struggles with decades in Israeli prisons for suspected terrorist activities. Those looking for even a symbolic magical solution to that conflict won't find it here: the lemon tree dies in 1998, just as the Israeli-Palestinian peace process stagnates. *Starred Review* To see in human scale the tragic collision of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, Tolan focuses on one small stone house in Ramla--once an Arab community but now Jewish. Built in 1936 by an Arab family but acquired by a Jewish family after the Israelis captured the city in 1948, this simple stone house has anchored for decades the hopes of both its displaced former owners and its new Jewish occupants. With remarkable sensitivity to both families' grievances, Tolan chronicles the unlikely chain of events that in 1967 brought a long-dispossessed Palestinian son to the threshold of his former home, where he unexpectedly finds himself being welcomed by the daughter of Bulgarian Jewish immigrants. Though that visit exposes bitterly opposed interpretations of the past, it opens a real--albeit painful--dialogue about possibilities for the future. As he establishes the context for that dialogue, Tolan frankly details the interethnic hostilities that have scarred both families. Yet he also allows readers to see the courage of families sincerely trying to understand their enemy. Only such courage has made possible the surprising conversion of the contested stone house into a kindergarten for Arab children and a center for Jewish-Arab coexistence. What has been achieved in one small stone building remains fragile in a land where peacemaking looks increasingly futile. But Tolan opens the prospect of a new beginning in a concluding account of how Jewish and Arab children have together planted seeds salvaged from one desiccated lemon tree planted long ago behind one stone house. A powerful story, a real tour de force!

In a conflict like the Israeli-Palestinian one, the truth seems to always be elusive. It is more often than not a question of perspectives and beliefs. And beliefs are only stories that we keep hearing repeated again and again and which are being reinforced and strengthened because we tend to only see that which we already believe to begin with.
Most Americans only know the Israeli side propagated by the powerful Israeli lobby that dominates US politics and so it is refreshing to come across a book that tells a different tale, or rather tales of both sides. It is only by putting ourselves in others' shoes that we can truly appreciate their suffering. Tolani does just that. His enormous compassion and talent as a historian and researcher serve him well in depicting the human dimension behind the conflict though I resisted feeling more hopeless than ever by the time I finished his book. The increasing tensions in the region and the mounting inflexibility of the current Israeli government combined with the impotence of the Palestinian Authority leaves no possibility for a viable two state solution. Ultimately, I believe the Palestinians and Israelis will be living in one secular democratic state. After all, basing a nation's identity on its religion - be it Islam, Judaism or Christianity - stands against the progressive ideals of diversity, inclusion and freedom.

MUST READ AND SHARE

This book has been circulating at our gym, and thank goodness it found me. I just loved it and will be reading it again. All of the history in the story was familiar to me: names, places, events. But the book put everything together in an informative and compassionate voice. It takes me to a place that allows me to understand better the current status of the situation of the Israeli and Palestinian people. I will be sharing the book with my church group and book club. My hope is that new readers will not only have their eyes opened but their hearts as well.

Unique and interesting book on screw exrusion

This is a very unique and interesting book on screw exrusion of polymers, and contains many suggestive observations not only on melting but also on solid conveying, metering etc. of extruders.

Chung model, different from other models, has been developed based on experimental results by a unique simulative apparatus called "screw simulator" and theoretical studies of them. There were discussions about the adequacy of applying the knowledge from the screw simulator to real single screw extruders. Chung persevered in his research, and published his achievements in book form.

About the Author

Jacqueline Bussie is Director of the Forum on Faith and Life and Professor of Religion at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. She has a BA, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Davidson College; an MA in Religion from Yale University; and a PhD in Theology, Ethics, and Culture from the University of Virginia.

Compulsively readable!

She has taken a subject that could be difficult, in fact would be difficult had she not placed it inside fascinating story after fascinating story. She grabbed my attention with the very first line. Not only has she challenged me, she has awakened something new in me: a desire to speak truthfully about how life is sometimes horrible, even for the most faithful followers of God. I've spoken my last well-intentioned pious "comfort lie" to people who are hurting. Thank you Dr. Bussie.

Outlaw Christian comes as a breath of fresh air for anyone who has ever felt angry at God, anyone whose faith is full of doubt, anyone who cannot simply “get over” a painful loss, anyone who struggles to honestly admit how imperfect life can be. Digging deep into messages from the biblical tradition that are too often overlooked, Jacqueline Bussie offers hope to those for whom Christianity is not a set of feel-good, cliché-sounding beliefs, but rather a path for seeking peace, justice, integrity, and healing in a world of overwhelming unfairness, suffering, and violence. In many ways, Bussie’s book popularizes the kind of critical thinking and questioning that many scholars in the field of religion encourage—the kind that has the potential to make one’s relationship with one’s sacred values more authentic, honest, and life-giving. Personally, I no longer envision God as having human-like qualities (e.g., as acting, knowing, intending, loving like people do). Yet Bussie’s theology is flexible enough to allow for (and even affirm) the kind of exploration and not-knowing that my unconventional spiritual proclivities require. By encouraging readers to “break the rules” that keep us from developing a more thoughtful, responsible, and honest faith, Outlaw Christian calls on everyone to confront the truth of their experience—even/especially if that truth is messy, painful, and/or uncertain—in order to grow personally and to bring some redemption to a broken world.

Buckle Up

Curious about the following expressions: composting pain, steward of suffering, radical listening, hope sleuth and shedding secrets? If so, buy this book! If not, buy it anyway! Then, buckle up for the ride of your life.

I consider myself a reasonably awake, believing Christian yet while reading this book, it was as if I'd taken The Red Pill (think Matrix) and started seeing a whole new reality. Scales came off and so did the shackles. Some anyway. Dr. Bussie's words not only liberate but challenge, affirm and inspire. Her truth telling is beyond refreshing- it's deeply necessary. For our culture...for our world. She is clearly a scholar yet writes a surprisingly accessible book. The biggest compliment I can give is upon finishing, I wanted to reread it immediately. This time, highlighter in hand.

It has been said that the glory of God is man - and woman - fully alive. It doesn't matter if you're disenfranchised, disconnected, disbelieving, doubting or somewhere else in a different pattern of alliteration, this book will set you on a path to full aliveness. And it may just launch you there.

About the Author

Carl Branden was educated at Uppsala University (PhD) and the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology, Cambridge, where he was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of J.C. Kendrew. He has pursued a career in basic research, science administration (as science advisor to the Swedish Government), and biotechnology. Formerly Research Director of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, he is now at the Microbiology and Tumor Biology Center at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. A protein crystallographer with a distinguished academic career in research and teaching, he has made major contributions to the understanding of many biological structures, and is an editor of Structure.

John Tooze was educated at Cambridge University (MA), London University (PhD) and Harvard University (where he was a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of J.D. Watson). After several years in basic research, he moved principally into science administration and science publishing, notably as the executive secretary of the European Molecular Biology Organisation, Heidelberg, Germany. He is currently Director of Support Services at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories, London, and editor of EMBO Journal. A molecular biologist, his previous books include Molecular Biology of Tumor Viruses, The DNA Story (with J.D. Watson) and the very successful first edition of Recombinant DNA: A Short Course (with J.D. Watson and D.T. Kurtz).

Basics of Protein Structure - Great for revision!

I used this book a lot for one of my undergraduate courses three years back. It's excellent at explaining the fundamentals of protein structure, it's written very clearly and the diagrams are easy to understand and appropriate. I found it particularly useful when studying immunology, the explanation of immunoglobulin structure, splicing, and mechanism of action was better than some of the other textbooks I used from the library. I finally bought a copy as reference and to aid revision of some basics while applying for research associate positions within the biochemistry field.

A Good Introduction to Protein Structure

This is a good protein structure book with a lot of intuitive cartoons on that. The major deficiency of the book is that it is slightly outdated because structural biology continuous making progress in recent years. There are very little in depth analysis based on the physical chemistry of protein, so it doesn't provide more insight into how protein functions. I give it 4 star because the pictures are really gorgerous.

This review refers to the second edition of this book, issued in 1999. The book, written by a noted crystallographer (Branden) and a molecular biologist (Tooze) noted for science education. Following up on an earlier edition, the present volume takes advantage of the enormous increase in solved protein structures that has occurred in the intervening years. The book is well written, clear, and makes excellent use of contrasting pastel colors to represent three-dimensional objects (proteins) on a two-dimensional page. One rather surprising omission is the lack of stereo views of proteins in a book about structure. These have become quite common in the structural biology literature, and I feel the book would have been strengthened by judicious inclusion of some examples.
The book, which would be suitable for an advanced undergraduate, graduate course or for biologist wishing to delve more into structure, begins with basic amino acid properties. The secondary structure elements of alpha helix and beta sheet are next introduced, along with some of the conventions used to illustrate structure in publications. How these structural elements are formed to build motifs, and motifs in turn are built into complex structures is discussed. Protein folding and flexibility are discussed, and proteins that assist in the process (e.g., chaperones, GroEL-GroES, disulfide isomerases) are highlighted.
The next several chapters deal with DNA structure, DNA recognition by helix-turn-helix motifs, and eukaryotic transcription factors. The various transcription factor families are outlined, with emphasis on their interactions with DNA. Next, the subject of enzyme catalysis is covered, using serine proteases as exemplars. Membrane proteins, signal transduction proteins, fibrous proteins and immune system components all have individual chapters that emphasize structural features in the service of function. There is a chapter on spherical virus assembly and structure. Two general chapters close the book: one on structure prediction and protein engineering and design, and a final chapter on protein structure determination, which deals with X-ray crystallography and NMR methods and studies.
