About the Author
Pete Babich is an electrical engineer. He learned the concepts of Hoshin Kanri while employed at Hewlett-Packard. He facilitated Hoshin implementation at the San Diego Division back in 1986. SDD was not the first HP division to implement Hoshin Kanri, but it was recognized as a "best practice" for Hoshin implementation. Pete left HP in 1991 to form Total Quality Engineering Inc. Since that time, he has helped numerous organizations is all industry segments to implement Hoshin Kanri. The Hoshin Handbook has been the basis for his Hoshin workshops and Hoshin Kanri software.

Hoshin Excellence

Participate in Pete Babich's huge experience. From a hands on perspective, stressing feasibility, he presents a well structured approach to steering a business unit by Hoshin Planning. The Vision as well as goals, objectives, measurables and strategies are translated into the speech of the internal customer, strategies become clear and well understood incrasing the buy in of all stakeholders in the company.

It's logical, it's based on standards, it stresses results as well as processes, so it's a powerful tool, especially when you're engage in any Change or Lean Management initiative. You won't have to invent the wheel again. I found many useful examples inside the cd. Implementation managers and / or consultants can save a lot of time using the charts in the book, time they might need to convince top management or the entire leadership crew to become familiar with the new Hoshin process. Because what is Hoshin about in the end? It's about leadership!

There is social-cultural side of implementing Hoshin and it is about change. Hoshin and Change Management must go together and Pete Babich gives a lot of implementation tips that help quality process managers and line managers save nerves and even money. In this way, Hoshin can be a success story.

Recently I read an article on Ford's new CEO's Leaderhip Style, which is driven by facts and data (and commitment). The first thought that came into my mind was, he must have read Pete Babich's book.

Excellent Hoshin "How To" Reference Book

Pete Babich has prepared an excellent Handbook on how to implement a Hoshin Plan. It is clear, concise, and to the point.

Companies that are interested in implementing a Hoshin Plan should definitely add this to their library.

He also includes a CD of Hoshin templates. In my opinion, the value is in the cultural transformation from traditional to Hoshin. Sometime the IT systems and software get in the way of the transformation (we spend too much time worrying about the numbers and not enough time aligning the organization).

Disappointing Rehash of Business Planning 101 Concepts and Theory

This book needs an urgent update given the demand for agile strategic and product planning, and advances in the Performance Excellence model topic (see Global Excellence Model Council - GEM) and NIST's Baldrige Performance Excellence framework. The general theme seems to replay business and marketing planning 101 theory, explaining the cascade between vision, values, mission and then of course strategies etc. This can be found in many other highly awesome sources, many of which are cited in the bilbiography.

However, I just did not see how its practical given today's flatter management structures to embark on a detailed and lengthy 'Hoshin Planning' exercise that lacks a tangible connection to a continuous improvement or transformation program. How do you keep it current? Also, the problem and root cause analysis examples were at best 'basic'. No indication of how impact drives involvement and propels action. I just don't think an 'annual breakthrough cycle' is plausible in today's high pace economy.

Teri Kwal Gamble (PhD, New York University; MA and BA, Lehman College, CUNY) is a professor of Communication at the College of New Rochelle, a professional writer of education and training materials, and the co-author of numerous textbooks and trade books. Almost new condition - fits well in three inch binder

A perfect instruction set

This book had the perfect advice for achievement of your goals. In my opinion, the first step is gratitude. It follows the concept of giving to receive or the open hand theory. Then on top that, writing your goals down and making them s.m.a.r.t. I loved the simplicity of this book. It's so simple and these are the only 7 steps you need for success. First redefine success to make it more than money or fame. Then follow the steps of this book step by step.

Fantastic book and one of the best books I have read on the topic of success

Does a great job at breaking down all the key areas for success. From the mental to the physical and covering the importance of setting new habits. I liked the fact the book explained a topic, broke down the benefits then showed how to put it into action.

My personal favourite things was at the end where the book showed you how to put all the tips into 1 morning ritual, giving me maximum benefits.

A great little inspiring and motivational read! So true and spot on with how we live life. We need to change our mindset in order to truly find happiness, and this amazing little book helps you begin this, helps you learn how to start thinking positively and changing your outlook to a more successful one. Happiness is all in the mind sometimes, and we just need to change our thoughts, set goals and have a great outlook on life!
Definitely recommend this book for anyone needing a kickstart. We all want a fulfilling life, and here's a great key to getting it!

About the Author

Michael Quinn Patton is an independent consultant with more than 40 years’ experience conducting applied research and program evaluations. He lives in Minnesota, where, according to the state’s poet laureate, Garrison Keillor, “all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.” It was this interesting lack of statistical variation in Minnesota that led him to qualitative inquiry despite the strong quantitative orientation of his doctoral studies in sociology at the University of Wisconsin. He was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota for 18 years, including 5 years as director of the Minnesota Center for Social Research, where he was awarded the Morse-Amoco Award for innovative teaching. Readers of this book will not be surprised to learn that he has also won the University of Minnesota storytelling competition.

He has authored six other SAGE books: Utilization-Focused Evaluation, Creative Evaluation, Practical Evaluation, How to Use Qualitative Methods for Evaluation, Essentials of Utilization-Focused Evaluation, and Family Sexual Abuse: Frontline Research and Evaluation. He has edited or contributed articles to numerous books and journals, including several volumes of New Directions in Program Evaluation, on subjects as diverse as culture and evaluation, how and why language matters, HIV/AIDS research and evaluation systems, extension methods, feminist evaluation, teaching using the case method, evaluating strategy, utilization of evaluation, and valuing. He is the author of Developmental Evaluation: Applying Complexity Concepts to Enhance Innovation and Use and coauthor of Getting to Maybe: How the World Is Changed, a book that applies complexity science to social innovation. His creative nonfiction book, Grand Canyon Celebration: A Father–Son Journey of Discovery, was a finalist for Minnesota Book of the Year.

He is a former president of the American Evaluation Association and recipient of both the Alva and Gunnar Myrdal Award for Outstanding Contributions to Useful and Practical Evaluation and the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Award for Lifelong Contributions to Evaluation Theory from the American Evaluation Association. The Society for Applied Sociology presented him the Lester F. Ward Award for Outstanding Contributions to Applied Sociology.

He is on the faculty of The Evaluators’ Institute and teaches workshops for the American Evaluation Association’s professional development courses and Claremont University’s Summer Institute. He is a founding trainer for the International Program for Development Evaluation Training, sponsored by The World Bank and other international development agencies each summer in Ottawa, Ontario.

He has conducted applied research and evaluation on a broad range of issues, including antipoverty initiatives, leadership development, education at all levels, human services, the environment, public health, medical education, employment training, agricultural extension, arts, criminal justice, mental health, transportation, diversity initiatives, international development, community development, systems change, policy effectiveness, managing for results, performance indicators, and effective governance. He has worked with organizations and programs at the international, national, state, provincial, and local levels and with philanthropic, not-for-profit, private sector, international agency, and government programs. He has worked with people from many different cultures and perspectives.

He has three children―a musician, an engineer, and a nonprofit organization development and evaluation specialist―and one granddaughter. When not evaluating, he enjoys exploring the woods and rivers of Minnesota with his partner, Jean―kayaking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing―and occasionally hiking in the Grand Canyon. Perfect for Sakura fans

Such a good book. Any Sakura fan will love this. Even if you don't like the couple Sasuke and Sakura, it doesn't really evolve around that. It is mentiones, and Sasuke is a big part of it. But it not really love based. It shows the true badass Sakura. And I love the friendship it shows with Ino.

A Good Read

I was highly satisfied when I finished this book, aside from the occasional confusing line, like Sakura being refereed to as Sasuke this was a very fun book to read. A section towards the end was disappointing but I won't go into details because of spoilers. If you are a fan of Naruto you should like this novel even if you are not the biggest Sakura fan, but if you are a Sakura hater this might not be the novel for you. I would recommend this book to fans of Naruto.

My niece loves Sakura and loves everything Sakura, so this book was a great gift as there isn't many Sakura Haruno gifts out there. Unless you want to buy a cosplay outfit for an expensive price. So yeah, this was perfect for my 13 year old niece. She hasn't put it down since I got it for her a few days ago. I would just recommend more pictures. There's only a few pages in the front and advertisement pages in the back for Naruto's book.

Behold, Brian Switzer's Magnum Opus -- The Jazz Deck

I collect playing cards alongside my musical studies. This is the most innovative deck of musical playing cards I have ever owned. The Jazz Deck by Brian Switzer is just what the name says, a textbook in a box of cards.

The colorful cards give you practice tips, a quick start with enharmonics, meaning two names for the same chord. The next four cards give you instructions on how to sound great over a major seventh, minor seventh flat five, minor seventh and dominant seventh. Each of these cards tells you what kind of chord to play over each, and which note to build your chord on. Each kind of chord is color coded, minor sevenths are red, major sevenths are blue, minor seventh flat fives are yellow, and dominant sevenths are green.

The next part of the deck is grouped by color code and chord type. Twelve blue Major seventh chord cards, twelve red Minor seventh chord cards, twelve green dominant seven chord cards, and twelve minor seven flat five chord cards. Each chord card has the chord written in a circle in simple form. On the back of each card, the chord is spelled out in note name and numbered degree form. The color coded notes in the middle are the notes you play to sound great, and the chord name of these notes is labeled in parentheses. On the bottom of each card, scale degrees are given by number and key name. Relative major and minor keys are indicated on the major and minor cards. Static chords are spelled out in note name on the dominant seventh cards. The last card in the deck has all twelve major scales on it. The flipside of the major scales deck has Brian Switzer's hand drawn trumpet logo.

In short, this deck of cards is a wealth of musical information in a deck of cards. Even though it initially is marketed as a Jazz Deck, the information on the cards bridges the entire world of musical genres. From one musician to another, if you want to arm yourself with information, education mixed with a few witty quotes from well known people, this is the deck of cards for you.

Jazz Deck - Great Product, Very Useful

I got alerted to The Jazz Deck by an email from the Jamey Aebersold Jazzbooks network. I've made some minor attempts at something like this, and had been searching for some perforated card stock. When I saw the Jazz Deck, I thought "Problem Solved ... Maybe". I checked for availablity on Amazon and decided to order from there.

On arrival, I was pleased with the quality of material. It's as sturdy as regular Playing Cards and the Print Quality is Professional.
Cards are color coded by chord quality(ie. Blue for Major7 Chords, Red - Minor7, Green for 7th Chords, & Yellow for Minor7b5 Chords ).

There are also 6 cards with brief tutorial/suggestion material.
Some may feel it's not comprehensive enough, and the suggested chord tones for soloing may not apply to all genres. However, there is still enough stuff there in concise format to create your own useful exercies for improving your own 'On-The-Spot' recall of whatever components of music theory you feel helps you become a better player & improvisor.

The one thing I might suggest improving is the case. It's hard plastic, but the top doesn't securely attach the bottom ... so it opens easily and the cards can easily tumble out by accident. I'm looking for a more secure case.

Overall ... The Jazz Deck is a great product.

The JazzDeck is an awesome tool for understanding music/jazz theory. It's cool to have a visual guide showing you which notes will sound the best and their intervallic relationship to the chord you're playing over. Great concept and full of useful information. Flawless transaction.

Tony's Best Kept Secret

Tony Parsons is one of the very few people today communicating this rare and uncompromising message of absolute nonduality, and he does so in a most eloquent, skillful, and at times humorous, fashion. Tony's words (both in print, as on his audio recordings) resonate with a poetic aliveness which resist any attempts of the dream individual to hold on to, leading the seeking mind to just give up. It is when this happens that another possibility can be seen, an awakening to Being. This is Tony's third published book, a collection of meeting dialogues from a variety of (mostly European) venues from 2001-2002. It does not appear to have been released in the U.S., and thus appears to have been missed out on by many here who enjoyed "As It Is" and "Invitation to Awakening." "All There Is" is a collection of timelessly fresh and radiant expressions which offer "a fragrance, the stillness and silence that is Home." The book is currently in print and available through the author's website (for which, simply do a web-search for the author's website, using the author's name and "The Open Secret").

Insightful but Incomplete

The essential idea - there is no 'you' or 'I', there is only 'this'. Or to put it another way, "this is all there is". If you understand this, then you do not need this book. If you do not, then this book will probably not help as it simply repeats this message over in different ways. Quite a conundrum isn't it? It also doesn't help resolve the various inconsistencies inherent in this teaching style, such as who wrote the book. Answer: no-one did. Or 'life' did. Again, while this is true, if you don't get it it really isn't that helpful. Various words are used such as 'appearance' or 'apparently' but the meaning of the words is not explained. This can lead to various interpretations and further confusion for the seeker.

My impression is that this kind of face-to-face teaching may be helpful for a very few who are 'ripe', but it doesn't work well as a book and there are much better alternative teachings that are less confusing.
