A few mistakes, but overall good.

Other than the fact that this didn't come in until two weeks after it was supposed to, this is (for the most part) a very good book. It adapts the anime beautifully, covering up through, I believe, halfway through the second episode. Meaning that at that rate, we can expect a sixteen-volume series. However, Ryuko's name is misspelled on the back of the book twice as "Ryuki." Additionally, the translator is rather inconsistent in terms of elongating syllables. The "no" in "Honnouji" is elongated, but the "ryu" in "Ryuko" isn't, and neither is the "so" in "sen-i soshitsu." Furthermore, the term "kamui" is translated as "godrobe" exactly once. Every time it appears after the first time, it's "kamui."

Still, though, this is pretty darn good. The art is good and the battles are exciting and over-the-top, just like the anime. Buy this.

A Great Adaptgation of the Anime

I really enjoyed the anime of Kill la Kill so this manga had quite a bit to live up to. It did not disappoint. This manga really captures the tone and feel of the anime and was really fun to read. The art is great, in my opinion. I can't wait for the next book in line!

Perfect for Fans of the Anime

This manga adaptation of the Trigger anime series of the same name is well worth your time and money if you enjoyed the show. The drawing style is different from the anime, but certainly not bad. The characters (especially protagonist Ryuko) have some really great expressions throughout. A very faithful adaptation, the only possible complaint is that it's too short, but for the price here on Amazon, I'd say it's worth it.

Awesome Book by Mr. Brown. Concise, informative, and his real world experience shines through. If you are even toying with the idea of starting to work as a player (sideman) I would recommend this book as it gives you all the facts without the filler.

Good guide

I ordered this book as a working sideman and I have to say that much of the information Mr Brown gives in this book is good stuff. I ran into some marketing ideas I have never heard before and learned a thing or two.

My experience as a bassist who doubles on upright and electric is a little different from Mr Browns. I think that doubling can increase a bassists income and opens up more opportunities in classical ensembles, string sections for large acts, and more traditional groups such as bebop, bluegrass, folk, and dixieland bands. I also realize that not all young electric players want to take the time to learn upright bass. Mr Brown covers his topic well, he just doesn't cover the possibilities available if one doubles. Just my slant on this I suppose. No fault of Mr Browns for not including it.

Overall an excellent book. I learned a few things and I have been in the business a while. Mr Brown has some very useful ideas in this book that any musician could use.

Shockingly good.

Another reviewer complains that there's no "framework" here. Thank God. Look, in some fields no matter how far you progress there's another framework - solid, concise, complex, interlocking body of knowledge - to be learned. Classical mechanics > electromagnetics > quantum, etc.

More commonly in other fields there's some basic useful framework everyone should learn right away, but once that's mastered progress is all about filling your head with and deeply internalizing a huge number of relatively simple facts, stories, and patterns. (Of course academics and their imitators do not accept this reality and pretend instead that the structure of knowledge in micro, macro, or psych - don't even get me started on biases/heuristics popularizations - can be reduced to a series of neat interlocking frameworks.)

Anyhow this book is packed dense with these useful chunks, and the more you've got stored away the more likely a light bulb of familiarity flickers in your head when you crack open a new 10-K.

For example, there's this company called Clearone that I've followed awhile that makes puzzlingly high gross margins considering what they do - video conferencing equipment. But it clicked when I read this book's chapter on how friendly middlemen can create unusually strong businesses, i.e. optometrists always recommending a particular brand of high quality glasses because he cares not at all about price.

Clearone sells to a friendly non-price sensitive middleman - big system integrators that do large scale technology installments for universities, corporations, hospitals, etc.

Anyhow, the book is great, dense, legitimately useful, and minimally redundant with other investing books because it skips the usual routine of either romanticizing basic value investing concepts or trying to force fit some artificial framework on the tangled mess of knowledge that is useful to investing.

Good Book on Quality Investing but No Framework

It is a very good book on investing in quality companies. Investing is very difficult and there are so many exceptions to rules so there needs to breadth. Unfortunately, the only problem with the book is there is too much breadth and it is difficult to take away a framework that can be used for analyzing companies. It is a very good book that should be read and re-read. It is just written in a way that seems to have no linear path or a structure that can be used in analyzing companies.

If you are interested in a framework for investing in quality companies must reads ahead of Quality Investing are Michael Mauboussin's Measuring a Moat Essay, Bruce Greenwald's Competition Demystified, Professor J.Carlos Jarillo's Strategic Logic, and Joan Magretta's Understanding Michael Porter.

About the Author
Roger Kamien received his B.A. in Musicology from Columbia and his M.A. and PhD. from Princeton. Kamien taught for 2 years at Hunter College and for 20 years at Queens College, where he coordinated the music appreciation courses. In 1983, he was appointed to the Zubin Mehta Chair in Musicology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In addition to Music: An Appreciation, Prof. Kamien has written numerous articles and reviews, co-wrote A New Approach to Keyboard Harmony, and edited the Norton Scores. He is an accomplished pianist and, in recent years, has formed a two-piano team with his wife, Anita.

Seems pretty dumbed down for a college course

I had to buy this for a college music appreciation class. While not having a 1000 page, 15 pound book in super small print was a nice change, I found the text to be over simplified for a college class. Not sure why the professor chose this particular text, since I'm sure there's more thorough books out there. This book seems to be geared more towards high school kids, or smarter-than-your-average-bear junior high kids.

This book is a good place to start if you want to learn the most basic of basics, especially if you use the CDs also. It's pretty nifty that CDs are incorporated into the text...like, "If you want an example of a Gregorian Chant, listen to track 19, oh and by the way, here's the history of this particular song." It covers a decent amount of ground as far as learning musical terms, characteristics of different kinds of music, etc.

As far as history goes, it's pretty much completely European and American oriented, as if those are the only two places in the world that create music. The history is fascinating, but very limited in scope.

A final tip--buy this book used, like I did. $10 is all you should pay for this book and the CDs, not $100.

Readers of Black Hawk Down know Mark Bowden can tell an exciting story about as well as any writer at work today. Killing Pablo is further proof. It describes the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar, a notorious Colombian drug lord who became one of the narcotic trade's first billionaires. Pablo--Bowden refers to him by his first name throughout the book--started out as a petty thief and wound up running a massive smuggling empire. At his height in the 1980s, he owned fleets of boats and planes, plus 19 separate residences in Medellin, each with its own helipad. Violence marked everything he did: "He wasn't an entrepreneur, and he wasn't even an especially talented businessman. He was just ruthless." He bought off police, politicians, and judges throughout his country, and killed many others who wouldn't cooperate. The Colombian government tried to capture him, but without much luck; he evaded them time after time. "Now and then the police achieved enough surprise to catch him, literally, with his pants down. In [1988], about one thousand national police raided one of his mansions," writes Bowden. "Pablo fled in his underwear, avoiding the police cordon on foot." He got away, again, but his days were numbered. He was making powerful enemies in both Colombia and the United States. The final straw probably came when Pablo's men murdered a popular politician and, three months later, planted a bomb on a plane, killing 110 people, including two Americans.

The bulk of Killing Pablo describes what happened when the U.S. government put its resources behind the hunt for Pablo. Bowden describes the search in gripping detail, from the massive electronic-surveillance effort to bureaucratic infighting between rival U.S. agencies. This is an outstanding work of reportorial journalism, too: in the epilogue, Bowden drops tantalizing hints that it was an American--not a Colombian--who delivered the killing shot to Pablo in 1993. Readers looking for a real-life thriller--or any kind of thriller, for that matter--won't do much better than Killing Pablo.

The author of the bestseller Black Hawk Down, which depicted the U.S. military's involvement in Somalia, Bowden hits another home run with his chronicle of the manhunt for Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. He traces the prevalence of violence in Colombian history as background, then launches into the tale of the dramatic rise and fall of "Don Pablo," as he was known. Packed with detail, the book shows how Escobar, a pudgy, uneducated man who smoked marijuana daily, ruthlessly built the infamous Medellin cartel, a drug machine that eventually controlled much of Colombian life. As Bowden shows, the impotence of the Colombian government left a void readily filled by Escobar's mafia. While not ignoring the larger picture e.g., the terrible drug-related murders that wracked the South American country in the late 1980s and early 1990s Bowden never loses sight of the human story behind the search for Escobar, who was finally assassinated in 1993, and the terrible toll the hunt took on many of its main players.. There's a smoking gun here: Bowden charges that U.S. special forces were likely involved in helping some of Colombia's other drug lords assassinate perhaps more than a hundred people linked to Escobar. There's no doubt, according to Bowden, that the U.S. government was involved in the search for Escobar after a 1989 airplane bombing that killed 100 and made him, in Bowden's words, "Public Enemy Number One in the world." This revelation highlights one of Bowden's many journalistic accomplishments here: he shows how the search for Escobar became an end in itself. Who is Pablo Escobar? Is he the loving family man who cares about his wife and children, the man who wants to help raise the standard of living for people in his community and loves nothing more than to play soccer with the kids in the neighborhood? Or is he the heartless kingpin who helped bring drugs into the United States, waged war with the Medellin Drug Cartel, and played cat and mouse with the police and the U.S. military who tried to capture him? The program, read by the author (Black Hawk Down), includes film of the final hunt for Escobar and of the aftermath. (The CDs are enhanced for computers with the appropriate plug-ins.) It is fascinating to hear about the ways that the police worked to locate Escobar using a variety of tracking devices, but the descriptions of the concomitant drug murders can be a bit graphic. KILLING PABLO: THE HUNT FOR THE WORLD"S GREATEST OUTLAW may be the only time a fictional character has recommended a nonfiction book to me: In AMC's series BREAKING BAD, teenaged "Flynn" White's uncle Hank Schrader, a DEA agent, recommended this book to his nephew as a realistic look at how the U.S. government gets the bad guys of the drug world.

Uncle Hank had a point. KILLING PABLO is as accurate an overview as we are likely get of how Pablo Escobar rose to prominence as the world's largest, richest and politically influential drug lord (Colombian cocaine) of his time, the Seventies and Eighties, prelude to the excruciatingly long time it took to bring such a highly visible, nimble, even popular character to justice in the later Eighties and early Nineties. It is quite possible that Escobar would have lasted a lot longer had the dual energies of the FBI and CIA had not entered Colombia and stayed on his case for the years necessary to root him out of the pretend jail he built for himself with clout and money -- then into fugitive status -- finally to justice, and here justice means shooting him dead (which by all accounts he richly deserved). But Escobar was simply the most spectacularly successful of the cocaine drug lords, and it has to be said that he'd never have had the opportunity to enrich himself had United States demand for the white "marching powder" had not reached epidemic levels in the 1970s and 1980s, infecting, we must recall, even one senior staffer in Jimmy Carter's administration.

All of this is never less than interesting, but occasionally a slow slog nonetheless, as Bowden is obliged to detail the nature of the Colombian economic and justice systems, which more or less against their will gave Escobar the kind of privilege and clout that would have made Al Capone blush. This saga simply does not have the tight dramatic structure of a BLACK HAWK DOWN, in which capture, planning and rescue were almost made for a three-act structure. Is there a take-with in the Escobar saga? Well, Mark Bowden writes well enough but is not willing to sacrifice detail for dramatic intensity; he has refused to write a "nonfiction novel" in KILLING PABLO. All this makes the book a worthy but not necessarily fascinating read. Nonetheless, it will continue to be read.

There may also be a lesson abrewing (call it a take-with for the future, if you will) that United States' intervention can accomplish near-miracles given enough money, time and commitment. (Bowden in fact belives that the competitive nature of FBI - DEA antagonism may have spurred the dominant DEA to do better than it would have otherwise). Nonetheless, it should be kept in mind that no matter how hard our government tries to understand that of another, something is going to be lost in translation. Perhaps it is not going too far to say that if the USA indirectly, and no matter how well meaningly, continues to set up the conditions that enable an Escobar, the citizens of such a country will look at such action less as beneficence, and more as a crude and costly remedial effort.

This is a really good history of the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar

As you would expect from Mark Bowden, this is a really good history of the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar. The Netflix TV show, Narcos, is not always factually accurate (but very entertaining). This is the real story of what happened. Of course, the TV show exaggerates some things. However, Pablo Escobar was so crazy, that the truth sometimes exceeds the fiction. "Killing Pablo" leaves a lot of loose ends (quite deliberately) because much of what really happened has never been fully disclosed. For example, who really fired the fatal bullet that killed Escobar? A Navy SEAL? A Colombian soldier in the final shootout? A Colombian police officer at point-blank range after Escobar was already down? At least so far, everyone who knows isn't talking and everyone talking doesn't really know.

Overall, this is a good to great book and highly recommended for anyone looking for the facts behind the Escobar story and much of the broader (and tragic) history of Colombia?

A Level-Headed Scientific Approach to Important Issues

What drew me to this book was not so much its title, although it is quite intriguing, but its author. I had read a couple of Professor Muller's books in the past and found them to be very engaging as well as models of clarity. This book is no exception. Using logical scientific reasoning, the author addresses various topics that a future president would likely need to deal with. The topics are: terrorism, energy, nuclear matters, outer space and global warming. Removing any mythology and misinformation that may be associated with these issues, the author carefully analyzes them from a physics perspective; this is to help any future presidents in making solid well-informed decisions. The contentious matter of global warming is dealt with particularly well; in fact, it is one of the fairest and most level-headed discussions of this matter that I have read thus far. A set of notes at the end of the book contain a few simple calculations that complement some of the statements in the main text. However, a reader who is math-phobic need to not worry since the notes are not essential to fully appreciate the book's content. The writing style is very clear, accessible, authoritative, friendly and quite engaging. This informative book can be enjoyed by anyone, especially those interested in the use of a logical scientific approach to address important world issues.

Clear and Objective

This book is not for the casual reader, but it is a must-read for those who pride themselves on being well informed in any one of the five important issues discussed in this book: Terrorism, Energy, Nukes, Space, and Global Warming. The author has ordered the subject matter according to what he believes are the most pressing issues that will confront the new President. While passionate about the subject material, the author is refreshingly detached in reaching his conclusions, as a physicist should be.

When I recommend this book to my better-informed friends, the most frequent question I get back is, "What does he say about Global Warming?" Those who are looking for pithy sound bites will be disappointed. Those who fear a boring professorial-type lecture will be pleasantly surprised. Dr. Muller presents well thought-out rationales for each section, and his delivery has been refined in the classroom by teaching non-physics students at the University of California, Berkley.

I appreciate Dr. Muller's respect for his readers (and future Presidents.) He does not try to impose a hidden agenda upon us. Dr. Muller clearly states his premises and the physics of his findings flows nicely from them

Here is a sketch of my views, as a physicist, on what the reader can expect.

Terrorism: Dr. Muller discusses the high energy content in the jet fuel carried by each hijacked airplane that hit the towers of the World Trade Center on 9/11. He later describes the likely limitations of a terrorist's dirty bomb. He reminds us that Jose Padilla, an American with extensive al-Qaeda training, proposed to build a dirty bomb. Padilla was directed instead to blow up two apartment buildings using natural gas.

Energy: Dr. Muller hits us with a number of "surprises," such as, gasoline delivers 15 times the energy of an equal weight of TNT; coal is 20 times cheaper than gasoline for the same energy; a square mile of sunlight at midday receives a gigawatt of power. He points out that gasoline holds 100 times more energy, pound for pound, than the high quality expensive batteries in cell phones. (Hence, although he owns a hybrid car himself, he is skeptical about the future of all-electric cars until batteries or fuel cells can be greatly improved.)

Nukes: Here he includes both nuclear weapons and nuclear power. After explaining how to estimate the dangers of exposing many people to radioactivity, he discusses the difficulty of building nuclear weapons. He describes how to build safe nuclear reactors, such as Pebble Bed reactors.

Space: Dr. Muller's believes that science should be the central goal of government space programs. Consequently, he advocates robotics rather than manned space travel. He uses a number of examples to illustrate rocket propulsion, orbits, spy satellites, stealth bombers, meteorite impacts, etc.

Global Warming: This is the most balanced and competent treatment of climate change that I have found. After a chapter on climate history, Dr. Muller discusses the Greenhouse Effect. The evidence brings him to the conclusion that most of the buildup of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is manmade. He then classifies the various kinds of distortions and exaggerations that have plagued this subject over the last decade. Next, he focuses on what he sees as the real task: reducing carbon dioxide. After a discussion of "Non-solutions," he addresses solutions. The centerpiece is a concept that he calls "Comfortable Conservation," by which he means better ways to accomplish a task that is less polluting and often cheaper. Florescent light bulbs are an example.

Oval office science

We don't expect our presidents to be literal rocket scientists (though it would be nice if one of them every so often was at least a metaphorical one), but we ought to expect them to know enough about science to surround themselves with the very best advisors. The troubling truth of the matter is that presidents, like most Americans, know little about science, even though public policy is increasingly dependent on scientific expertise. So author Richard Muller, who teaches science to nonscience majors at UC-Berkeley, has written his Physics for Future Presidents not only for future presidents but also current citizens.

The book isn't an easy read, and there are enough graphs and equations to set aflutter the hearts of even the most intrepid of nonscientists. But Muller recognizes this possibility, and recommends that nonscientific readers go for the big picture, not allowing themselves to get bogged down with details that might be too complicated on a first run-through. And the big picture--or rather big pictures--he wants us to understand are the science behind bombs and biological weapons likely to be used by terrorists (chapters 1-4), the fossil fuel crisis (chapters 5-7), nuclear energy and nuclear weapons (chapters 8-14), space technology, including space weapons (chapters 15-19), and global warming (chapters 19-25). Especially helpful are the "Presidential Summaries" in which Muller offers convenient wrap-ups of each of the five topics he discusses and some quick public policy recommendations.

My guess is that many readers will find his section on global warming the most interesting and contentious. Muller concludes that global warming is a reality, but one which has been exaggerated in certain ways. Other conclusions that will doubtlessly be contested by some include his claim that disposal of nuclear waste from power plants isn't really a problem (pp. 173-77) and that there's no viable alternative to fossil fuels in sight (in this regard, by the way, Muller agrees with James Howard Kunstler's conclusion in the latter's brilliant The Long Emergency).

It's in the arena of public policy recommendations that Muller, I think, falls short. His answers are too often quick and easy. (Quick example: when it comes to public policy, we (meaning the US but presumably any other country too) "have no right" to insist that China (or presumably any other country) cut back on pollution creation. The implication of this is that the international community has no moral authority--a scary conclusion. And even though Muller claims to be letting science speak for itself in every chapter but one (p. 173), science, performed as it is by opinionated humans, rarely speaks in neutral terms, especially in a book like this. Perceptive readers will pick up on Muller's interpretation of what he considers to be basic data, especially when it comes to global warming trends.

Still, a very helpful, very good book. Even if presidential candidates don't actually read it, it's good that voters do.
