I bought this one when I was planning my journey to India, where I stayed for 6 months.
Studying with it and also with a native Tamil speaker while in India I obtained a LOT of congratulatory comments from my Indian colleagues, that make me believe this is a very nice start kick to Tamil language.
Despite, it's just impossible to do what the title invites you to: learn Tamil in a month, without ever hearing it? No, not possible.

Intro to Tamil

Tamil is one of the main Indian languages. For me, understanding the grammatical details is a bit confusing because it seems to "decline" words differently from other languages. Many grammatical terms are in Tamil, which makes things somewhat difficult to pronounce or understand. This is probably one of the main texts on Tamil and it's one that you need to take your time with, step by step. Tamil has a beautiful script. It is great for calligraphy.

Schadenfreude in spades

After seeing a reissued "director's cut" version of "Heaven's Gate," the movie so expensive to produce and so poorly received by the critics in 1980 that it destroyed Michael Cimino's reputation as a director and led to the demise of United Artists, I sought out this book by one of the United Artist producers involved in the project (and who also lost his job in the aftermath). It's a fascinating story. How could Ciminio--who had just come from making "The Deer Hunter," which netted him Academy Awards for best picture and best director--have created such a mess? Vastly exceeding its budget, "Heaven's Gate" was visually spectacular but had a poor sound track and a story that verged on incoherence at times. Why did United Artists let him do it? This book tells the story in great detail and Steven Bach was a fine writer. The most interesting parts, however--the Cimino story--gets lost from time to time in Bach's efforts to paint a comprehensive picture of United Artist's glorious history (it was founded by Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks) as well as describing the Hollywood system of movie making in general. I found myself skipping parts. But, that being said, it's a great read and a fabulous story of hubris and Hollywood finances.

When Art Meets Business!!

Must read for anyone interested in film making and the business of distribution. While art is important to some this still is a business that needs "product." Self indulgence too often results in a product that no one wants except the i individual who indulged himself. This is an inside baseball book that the late Mr. Bach wrote with honesty and passion.

A Steven King story come to life.

Not so much that it is horror (people aren't dying or being stalked by monsters), but in how the process of making the film started out wrong, and continues to get more and more wrong at every step. As a history, you know how it'll end, but it's still almost depressing how at each step the execs make wrong decision after wrong decision, throwing good money after bad. If Bach is to be believed, he and his confederates were so desperate for a defining hit that they simply talked themselves into a disaster, didn't have the guts or experience or self-preservation instinct to cut their losses and then the piper was paid.

Cimino comes across as someone who simply needed to be told no on occasion and forced to work within limits, and the early rejection of his Fountainhead idea shows that that was probably possible. But once the train started rolling, nothing save a miraculous Citizen Kane level result would have saved the day, and Heaven's Gate was no miracle. You could tell by the way they caved in to his demand to cast Huppert that the only real option had become ditching the project altogether, but that's not how ego works. Some say it's a masterpiece (though with the sound issues, absurd length and lack of narrative dynamism that's pretty hard to support), but it didn't need to be a masterpiece; it needed to be a hit. It wasn't and it destroyed Cimino's career and UA along with it. We are left to wonder whether a fictional account of a war that never happened was worth it.

About the Author

Jonathan Little is a professional poker player from Pensacola. He started playing poker when he was 18 years old and quickly became one of the biggest winners in sit n go tournaments online. Lots of examples, analytical approach, and a great structure, especially for the kindle edition!

If you have read the first two volumes, of course you will get this one as it completes the circle, but even without them, you will find lots of great info and advices through this Workout Book.

Allows you to get into the mind of a Tourney Champ like no other poker resource I've seen. By making decisions yourself, through each hand and in a step-wise manner, the reader is challenged to make the correct play while then having the benefit of a full analysis to explain the Champs strategy.

Griswold priceing guide not what I wanted

I had purchased this Griswold book because it was to be a pricing guide. But was disappointed in that it did not give very many prices for the items. My husband is an avid collector of Griswold products and I wanted him to have a current pricing guide. Although this book did provide information about the Griswold products, it was definately not a pricing guide.

Great Learning Tool!

This book it great for learning how to recognize great finds and how to ascertain the values in collectors' circle. You may have to thumb through the pages to find the items; but, that in itself is a learning experience. The history of the industry is as valuable as the prices of the pieces. And you won't find this much experience in cast iron between any other cast iron books (if you can find any other cast iron books).

Ronald E. Giachetti is an Associate Professor of Engineering Management at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. Prior to joining FIU in 1998, he worked at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. At the end of each chapter there are concept and exercise questions that will help you verify your knowledge of the subject matter. The only thing missing in this book is that the exercise problems do not include potential solutions. While I do understand that Designing an Enterprise System depends on the problem and point of view of the observer, having a general guide to answering the exercises would have been helpful.

From my point of view, this book was designed well for students; guiding them step-by-step through different topics. For professionals, the book also stands as a useful reference guide.

This books includes the following chapters: Enterprise Engineering, systems theory, modeling concepts, Enterprise design methodology, Enterprise architecture, Enterprise analysis and design methodology, strategy, problem formulation and requirements, generate and evaluate alternatives, process modeling, queuing theory, process design, information modeling, information design, organization design, enterprise technology and integration.

I highly recommend it for anyone studying enterprise systems. However, if you are new to this topic the only problem would be the lack of answers to the exercise questions.

As in modern macroeconomics, individual citizens behave rationally, their preferences over economic outcomes inducing preferences over policy. As in public choice, the delegation of policy decisions to elected representatives may give rise to agency problems between voters and politicians. And, as in rational choice, political institutions shape the procedures for setting policy and electing politicians. The authors outline a common method of analysis, establish several new results, and identify the main outstanding problems.

The concept of One World is often a multi-colored tapestry into which
sundry, if not contending patterns can be woven. for those of us who worked
on  this  project, ‘One World’ goes beyond the everyday notion of the globe
as a physical geographic entity. Rather, we understand it as a universal idea,
one that transcends national boundaries to comment on the most prevailing
aspects of the human condition.

This attempt to redefine the borders of the world we live in through the
short story recognizes the many conflicting issues of race, language, economy,
gender and ethnicity, which separate and limit us. We readily acknowledge,
however, that regardless of our differences or the disparities in our stories, we
are united by our humanity.

We invite the reader on a personal journey across continents, countries,
cultures and landscapes, to reflect on these beautiful, at times chaotic, renditions
on the human experience. We hope the reach of this path will transcend the
borders of each story, and perhaps function as an agent of change.

One World: An Introduction

I felt it necessary to write a review to balance the negative review.

I teach high school literature classes, and I bought this book on a whim because the editor, Chimamnda Ngozi Adichie, is the author of a book I use in class, Purple Hibiscus. I didn't know if I would be able to use any of the short stories, but I tried a couple of them out on my kids this year ("Growing My Hair Again" and "Homeless"). The students responded quite well to them.

Granted, I would not use all of the stories with high school students--some are not appropriate and some are beyond their maturity--but it's a nice book to have on my shelf and to use to broaden the experiences of a bunch of white midwestern kids.

I would not sit down and read the anthology cover to cover (but, really, how many people read an anthology that way anyway?) Doing so would certainly make a person rather depressed, but it is important to see another point of view in the world. It's not all "Chicken Soup for Soul" in the rest of the world.

I was looking for something different to read on the train. I like that each story is by a different author from a different country. Very good read so far. Plus, all the author's royalties go to Doctors without Borders, so I can feel good about that!
