About the Author
Susan Howatch (b. 1940) is a British novelist who has penned bestselling mysteries, family sagas, and other novels. Howatch was born in Surrey, England. She began writing as a teen and published her first book when she moved to the United States in 1964. Howatch found global success first with her five sagas and then with her novels about the Church of England in the twentieth century. She has now returned to live in Surrey.

Wanda McCaddon has won more than twenty-five AudioFile Earphones Awards, including for The Seamstress by Sara Tuvel Bernstein, for which she also earned a coveted Audie Award. AudioFile magazine has also named her one of recording's Golden Voices. Wanda appears regularly on the professional stage in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Dinah Slade will do anything to keep her family home in Norwich, England, out of the hands of estate agents. But little does she know what twists of fortune will result from her dalliance with the great American banker, Paul Van Zale. Nadia May captures the essence of the six first-person narratives comprising the story, to the point of making recognizable each character's voice as related by the others. However, her portrayals of young children come across as contrived and squeaky. Furthermore, technical problems with the tracking of the MP3 version reviewed here, most likely corrected by now, marred this listener's audio experience. Howatch is wonderfull

Howatch puzzles me, her novels look like run of the mill pulp fiction best sellers to judge by the covers but once you start to read them you discover a formidable intelligance. Why doesn't this author have the reputation her skills entitle her to, she is easly up there with Drabble, Murdoch and other Doyens of the British novel.

The rich are just like everyone else, except they have more money.

This book was recommended to me by a friend. It took me a while to actually pick it up and start reading it, but three pages in, I knew I was hooked.

Other reviews mention that this book is a modern re-telling of the story of Cleopatra's affairs with Caesar and Antony, so I won't go into that too much here, except to add that it's a neat conceit, and Howatch works these plot details into the novel flawlessly. There were several moments when I smiled or chuckled to myself when I noticed something I remembered from I, Claudius or The Lives of the Caesars.

However, even if you don't know or don't care about ancient history, this is a gripping, surprisingly fast-paced, incredibly well-written novel. Dinah Slade is a fascinating woman in her own right, rather than a mere shadow of one of history's most infamous characters. Ditto Paul Van Zale, Steve Sullivan, and Cornelius, all of whom leap off the page and seem right at home in the America and England of the early 20th century. The men and women who populate the world of the novel are driven by the same things that drive us: greed, pride, love, lust, ambition, the need for security, and the hope of a better life for their children.

To me, the most fascinating aspect of the book, and the one that might have been the easiest thing for Howatch to mess up, is the fact that the story is divided into six sections, each narrated by a different character (Dinah Slade gets two.) The varying personalities all come to life, giving us sometimes overlapping accounts of the plot line, all of which add up to one heck of a great story.

I just read that the saga continues in The Sins of the Fathers, which I'm going to purchase right now.

This is a Modern Day Story of Caesar.

I've ready this book about 6 times for the past 10 years and it always delights. It didn't hit me, until I started studying ancient Rome that it is the very story of Caesar and Cleopatra, but set in Wall Street, New York (as powerful as ancient Rome!) The story begins identical to the first meeting of Caesar and Cleopatra...just as Cleopatra was brought to Caesar rolled in a carpet and carried by her faithful servant...so is Diana Slade brought to Paul Van Zale concealed in a cart and rolled in by her trusty Geoffry. Paul's wife is barren, just as history says that Caesar's wife Calpurnia was barren. Guess what else? Paul has epilepsy - who else can you think of that historians believe ALSO had epilepsy? Paul's right-hand man Steve is described exactly as Marc Antony...burly, surly and with dynamic charm - guess what? Diana and Steve find an even greater love than Diana and Caesar...oops I mean Paul Van Zale...Paul is assasinated by the son of his ex-mistress (If you know your history...you know that Brutus is the son of Caesar's ex-mistress Servilia...) Paul leaves his fortune to his cunning, clever, sickly nephew Cornelius. Who also mirrors Octavian (Augustus Caesar in later years) Octavian becomes Diana's bitter enemy and vows to take from her the one thing that she holds most dear...Mallingham her ancestral home... Just as Octavian vowed to take Egypt from Cleopatra. Steve is hounded by Cornelius much as Antony was hounded by Octavian and finally dies a virtual suicidal death...When Cornelius tries to take Diana back to New York (mmmh, seems to me that Octavian wanted to bring Cleo to Rome...) Diana gets the last laugh. Paul's son also dies in his early years just as Caesarian did...I can go on and on, but you get the picture. In my youth, I considered this a truly original masterpiece...but I now know that the entire story is the most famous in history and that it did not come from Ms. Howatch's incredibly imaginitive mind. It does not mean this book isn't worth reading...It Is!! We'll just have to forgive her for borrowing from history. I have ready many of her books and they are all wonderful. I usually read them many times.

His buildings such as the Paimio Sanatorium (1933), the legendary Villa Mairea (1939) and the church of the Three Crosses in Vuoksenniska (1958), embody a masterful interplay of organic volumes, forms and materials. From door handles and lighting fixtures to built-in furniture, Aalto frequently designed complete interiors down to the smallest detail. With his plywood chairs, the master builder additionally became one of the most significant designers of the twentieth century. His Savoy Vase represents the quintessential qualities of Finnish and organic design. This richly illustrated book is the first in many years to offer a comprehensive and current overview of Aalto’s oeuvre as an architect, designer and urban planner. Ten authors, including the renowned architectural historians Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen and Akos Moravanszky, and MoMA curator Pedro Gadanho, address central aspects of Aalto’s work. Particular attention is paid to Aalto’s dialogue with important artists of his day, including Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger, as well as his interest in film, cinema and photography, whose influences on his work are examined here for the first time. The catalogue section presents numerous never-before-seen original drawings and architectural models from the archive of the Alvar Aalto Foundation. This perspective on Aalto is complemented with photographs by Armin Linke, who documented a number of Aalto’s buildings anew especially for this publication. A beautiful to hold

A beautiful to hold, beautiful to look at, and beautiful to read monograph on Aalto. If you are looking for a slick large-format book full of detailed photos I might look elsewhere, but the archival material, artful new photos, and especially the fascinating essays make for a wonderful book.

More Boring To Read Than Textbook

This was my most anticipated book to buy for 2014 after witness the failed attempt by Robert McCarter earlier that year, and my stubborn refusal to pay $300 dollars for 3 overpriced black and white Xerox copies by Birkhäuser. Unfortunately my principle and patience didn't payoff that year, and my dream of hoping to buy a better Aalto book than Richard Weston's version was shattered like the snow globe that I accidentally dropped at Strand Bookstore.
The book was small in page format with about 75% text and we are talking about a 648-page volume. It has more text per image than a Kenneth Frampton's architectural theory book. The rest are drawings and normal at best photographs. Don't be fooled by the four semi-decent images they show on Amazon because that's probably the best images throughout the whole book.
I was going to put the book back on the shelf and walk away without saying anything, but I soon realize that's ethically wrong because some poor student or intern might spend $60 of their hard earn money on it and expect lots of drawings and beautiful photographs than an overpriced furniture brand on the cover. So, I decided to share my humble personal opinion. And of course, I do not speak for those who enjoys reading phone book.

Biased but informative

It is obvious the author is biased to no-holds bar stem cell research. It does have some good information though if you want to know more about the debates of embryo research you just have to be able to read between the lines and think for yourself. I would suggest Stem Cell Now as a less biased report.

The one book to read on this subject

If you're only going to read one book on this subject, or need one book for a paper or report, this is the go-to book. Dartmouth professor Ron Green was on a national commission that studied the use of human embryos in research and he provides an insider's look at the deliberations, politics, and pressures on his commission.
He also offers a balanced, humane, scholarly look at the question, plus accurate information on the embryology and biology surrounding the issue.All in all, a great book.

LIKE DAVE CANTERBURY, BUT THIS BOOK IS PRETTY WORTHLESS

This publisher (Adams Media) let Dave Canterbury down, and Dave admits that in his review of his own book. Due to ignorant editing, parts of this book are completely useless. In the trapping section, there are NO pictures, diagrams, or anything to show how to set these traps. I know that Dave knows how to do these things because I enjoyed watching him on "Dual Survivor", but his stupid publisher cut out the diagrams, rendering this section TOTALLY useless. I hope that Dave finds a new, COMPETENT publisher for the next edition. Other reviewers correctly pointed out that some reviewers gave high ratings to Dave Canterbury himself rather than honest ratings of this book. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT THIS BOOK PROVIDES VERY LITTLE INFORMATION THAT YOU CAN ACTUALLY USE, due to the ignorance of the publisher.

Great Book from an Experienced Author

Just finished reading Bushcraft 101 cover-to-cover and overall I am impressed. Dave covers a wide range of woodcraft related subjects, from tool and gear selection, to setting up camp, to harvesting food.

In Part 1 he covers the "5 C's" (Cutting, Container, Cordage, Cover, Combustion) in-depth. These are the items that will most directly affect your survival and ability to maintain your core temperature outdoors. They are also the hardest to reproduce in the wild from natural materials.
* He lists many different options for each category, historic and modern, and lists some pro's and con's for most of them. He gives his personal preferences for each, which usually favor durability and longevity over weight and price. Getting the best bang for your buck, as it were.
* He covers gear maintenance and repair which is nice.
* The knots section is well done, with clear illustrations. There are not a ton of knots here, but the ones listed are multifunctional, and useful in many different scenarios.

If looking for an ultra-light hiking guide you may want to look elsewhere, Dave does tend to go a bit tool heavy. But if you want solid choices that will last for many years and serve you well, his recommendations are a great guideline. Also remember that they are just that, recommendations. If weight is a higher priority for you, and you want to choose a Sil-Ny tarp over Oilskin, go for it. If you want Titanium instead of Stainless (and can afford it), go for it. Your experience in the woods belongs to you, go with what will make the time more enjoyable for you.

In Part 2 he gets more into the camping side of woodcraft. He covers topics ranging from how to set up your camp, navigating terrain, and trapping.
* The setting up camp section is well done, with a lot of tips on how to get the most enjoyment out of your time in the woods, and can help avoid many of the pitfalls that could lead to a negative experience.
* The navigation section covers Map and Compass use in-depth. He also gives suggestions on how to create your own maps of your local area.
* The trapping section is excellent. He covers several types of traps, modern and primitive, and gives recommendations on placement and baiting to help you achieve the most success. This is a bit of an advanced topic to be in a '101' book though.

Some things that could be better:
* As others (including Dave) have said, the book could use more illustrations and/or pictures. There are a lot of illustrations in the book, but some of the sections like Trees and Plants would have been a much greater benefit with some pictures. Words alone can only go so far, and a picture is worth 1000 of them. :)
* Some sections could be expanded on a bit more. They felt a bit 'rushed', and not covered as deeply as they could be. For example Fishing is mentioned a couple times, but not really covered in depth. In many cases (if near appropriate water) fishing can be a much more reliable method for catching food than trapping.
* I wouldn't really label this as a 'survival' manual. While many of the topics covered could help in a survival situation, they are presented from the perspective of Wood/Bushcraft, camping, and just generally being comfortable and having fun in the outdoors.

One thing to keep in mind here though is that this is a "101" book. It is an introduction, a primer to get you interested and get you out and enjoying the outdoors yourself.

Overall I like the book. For my experience I've been an outdoorsman my entire life. My parents had me out camping when I was only a week old more than 35 years ago. :) And I've been camping/hunting/fishing every chance I get since. I have also watched all of Dave's Youtube videos and I watch/read many others from the Bushcraft/Survival field as well. I have a real passion for this stuff. Even with all that I still picked up some new knowledge from this book. It's good to get a different perspective on things to help in evaluating your own choices. I think this book deserves a place in any outdoorsman's collection.

Not bad, but not complete

There are some good topics covered in here, but this is not a complete bushcraft guide. If you want to go into the wilderness with a hard-frame pack carrying wool blankets and 100 lbs of small animal traps, this book is for you. There is also great detail in the coverage of tarps, shelters, and how to treat cloth to build a good shelter in the woods. The section on knife care is also superb; better than most. However, the emphasis seems to be on shelter, warmth, axe/knife care, compass navigation, and wood harvesting as applicable to the Eastern woods. There is barely a page on fishing and not nearly enough discussion of fishing, harvesting plants, cordage, and firestarting. Perhaps that's why the author has another book called "Advanced Bushcraft."
Overall this book taught me some good things I didn't know, but I am glad I have some other bushcraft books to supplement with. The book is mercifully small and light, so it is one you can carry into the woods with you, unlike some. I recommend supplementing this book with Tom Brown, Jr.'s Wilderness Survival book which covers much of what this book lacks. However, neither of these books has quite enough in the way of pictures/illustration.

Fun and informative

After months of getting asked "what's inside of a truck?" by my 4-yr-old, I did a search and found this book. It's good! The graphic illustrations are very helpful. The information would be best for 6-10-yr-olds, but you can simplify it (like I do) when you read it with younger kids. The book isn't perfect: a couple of the illustrations are repetitive, and an extra piston picture would have made the step-by-step piston explanation a little clearer. I also wouldn't have minded it being a few pages longer. But you can't have everything. Good book.

With "no-knead" bread recipes all the rage now, expert baker Reinhart (Whole Grain Breads) has come back with a process that is slightly more involved but much more productive than the limited classic no-knead method, yielding all manner of sweet, savory and sandwich breads. He introduces a "stretch and fold" technique that, combined with a slow rise and without the lengthy prefermentation that his and other artisan bakers' recipes usually require, means more freedom and less active work time, but still a very flavorful product. To make French baguettes, for example, only one brief knead is required; then, after an overnight or multiday rise, the dough is ready for shaping—much better than being shackled to the kitchen for an entire morning for multiple rises, as is usually the case in baguette making. Other great breads, such as focaccia, soft cheese bread and even panettone, get similar preparation makeovers. Reinhart occasionally calls for a starter, but his carefully constructed, nonintimidating mother starter method should encourage the wary. For bakers who have come to bread through the no-knead route, Reinhart's thorough, detailed recipes offer a perfect way to expand their repertoire without getting their hands too sticky or giving up too much of their time, while those who are already fans will appreciate having a little more room in their schedule while still producing terrific breads. Great stuff, but a few problems

First things first. I have been baking bread and pizzas for more than 30 years, and within a few days of receiving this book, I learned a few things and saw some improvements. Since baking better bread is the only purpose of this book, it ranks as a success.

I'd say the book is ideal for either beginners or "experts" like me, as long as you are willing to throw away (or at least forget for a while) everything you know about baking bread. In my years of baking, I learned that you can't freeze dough, yeast likes warm places, and the longer you knead dough, the better. Reinhart has a different opinion, and he seems to be correct.

The Good Points

* So far I have made baguettes, sourdough and pizza using recipes and techniques in the book. All turned out excellent. I can now bake "crusty" baguettes on demand, and can produce that micro-thin, slightly stretchy pizza crust in a kitchen 3000 miles from New York (although with slight additions to Peter's recipe).

* I always "knew" you couldn't freeze dough, but following Peter's advice, I now regularly freeze dough for pizza, and it turns out great. Combined with premeasured bags of frozen sauce, fresh hot pizza is now a "freezer" item. Awesome, except for my diet.

* I learned new techniques for working with dough, and for the most part they seem to work great. The book organizes the basic dough techniques (stretching, proofing, etc) in one section at the front of the book so you can find them easily. (More on this below).

* Subject to some issues described below, the instructions are reasonably easy to follow. They are written in easy-to-understand terms, and Peter avoids the usual pedantic language often found in higher-end cookbooks. Nothing worse than needing a dictionary and a translator to make soup.

* Reinhart doesn't try to convince you that you need to go out and buy $1000 worth of proofing pans, proofing boxes, special cloths, etc. Just use what is in your house already.

The Bad Points (Note first paragraph in review)

* The directions can get a bit carried away with themselves. Personally, quantities like 3 3/8 teaspoons of salt drive me nuts. I might breakdown and use an actual measuring spoon instead of a teaspoon, but there is no way I am not going to eyeball the last half teaspoon.

* The directions are written in a narrative format rather than a list of items typical in recipes. As a result I will often end up re-reading the whole recipe numerous times just to find the next step. This can be a bit of a pain, because many of the recipes have quite a few steps. Typical will be mix for 2 minutes on low, wait 5 minutes, switch to a dough hook, mix for 3 minutes on medium, wait 5 minutes, fold and stretch dough, wait for 10 minutes in an uncovered bowl, stretch again.... You get the idea. For every step, you will end up re-reading most of the recipe. A little indenting/change of fonts/highlighting/bold/etc in the layout would do wonders for the book.

* The directions can get overly detailed, but yet unclear-forcing you to interpret multiple directions to be sure you know exactly what Reinhart meant. Not a real big deal, but something one more round of proofreading should have caught.

* Basic techniques such as kneading and proofing are in a separate section of the book, and then referred to by individual recipes. Except when they are not-some recipes include the details, some refer you to the front of the book. Since the directions are already somewhat bloated and poorly formatted, I'd prefer to just have references to a single section.

* At least one of the recipes (sourdough mother starter) has all the quantities in cups, until you get to the final steps when everything is now in grams. I don't have a metric (or even English) scale in my kitchen.

* Some of the steps are explained in agonizing detail, and them some are skipped over. It takes 5 pages to explain how to make the sourdough starter, but then the "how to refresh the starter dough process" is skipped over. List the quantities of old starter, flour and water (see above), but then makes no mention of what to do with it- proof at room temp? immediately return to the refrigerator? How long does it need to refresh?

* Mom always taught me that you can't really measure flour-you have to add it to the dough as needed. The reason for this is that flour can have a vastly different moisture content, so what works once might yield overly tacky/dry dough the next time. Reinhart doesn't seem to subscribe to this theory, at least not in all his recipes. After mixing up a batch of the gooiest pizza dough on the planet, I'd say Mom was right.

* Some of the baking times listed are suspect. I suspect they are worse case time for very large loafs, not typical times for baguette sized creations. Caveat baker.

* None of the recipes I have tried so far are for anyone in a hurry. Every recipe so far has taken days to complete. Not a negative...yeast will be yeast. Just something to be aware of.

Overall:

A great guide to breadbaking-both for specific recipes and learning to update your artisan skills. I learned a lot from it, and have made a number of items, all of them unqualified successes. If you are looking to whip up a batch of bread as quickly as your bread machine, this is not your book. If you want to spend a few days working with yeast to get a baguette worthy of Paris (OK, maybe New York), this is your book.

Great book for both novice and accomplished bakers

I was a tester for this book. I tested all of its recipes and almost all of the variations. This book is perfect for either a complete novice or an accomplished baker. It is written in a straight-forward, down to earth manner and has great pictures illustrating all the techniques, various stages, and final products. Even though I am an accomplished baker, I learned a lot of new techniques from the information contained in this book that either improved and or simplified my bread making. All of the recipes work. There is not one dud in the entire book! The recipes run the gamut from lean relatively simple breads, e.g., basic baguettes, to more complex products, e.g., croissants. If I could only own one of Peter Reinhart's books this is the one I would choose. There is a lifetime of baking in this book.

Another Great Work From Peter Reinhart

I have been baking bread as a hobby for a little over 2 years. I have always been fascinated with baking bread but I never found a satisfactory resource until I found Peter Reinhart's "Bread Baker's Apprentice." This was a great resource as Peter is a very skilled teacher and conveyor of information. I also purchased a copy of Peter's "Whole Grain Bread's" and was equally excited by the bread baking techniques that he shares. Also, you can see an evolution in the baking style between the two books as the author seems to learn from each publication. I purchased this newest book yesterday, and after reading through it I can see that he has continued to learn and I really appreciate the techniques used in this book as they are even easier to perform, and easier to understand, than the first two books. This book is great for people just getting into bread baking as it contains many of the same fundamental styles of bread found in Peter's other books. However, if you already own Peter's previous publications do not let that deter you from purchasing this one as there are new techniques and formula's for different breads. I am especially looking forward to trying the formulas in the section on Cheese bread, as well as the onion and wild rice bread. The techniques presented in this book are simpler, and more straightforward than previous ones as the formulas are streamlined so that the use of a seperate pre-fermented dough is not necessary. Also, these recipes, although still requiring at least two days, take less hands-on time to make. I am very excited to try the breads presented in this book, and I would highly recommend anyone who enjoys baking bread to purchase this exciting new work from Peter Reinhart.

Describes the Burgundy wine country in detail

This book describes Burgundy in detail but still provides a broad overview of the region. It does a great job describing the individual villages such as Puligny-Montrachet and the things that make each village unique.

Great overview of Burgundy wines

Provided a good introduction and overview to the various areas of Burgundy. It included a history of winemaking in the regions as well as specifics on the characteristics of the wines from each region.

Its a Photo Book, thats it.

Beautiful pictures with short poetic writings on a few appellations and broad history.
Thats what this book is, but it does not have much more info and dont bother if your trying to become a burg expert. Though I guess you do need to see what the vineyards look like.
