Went from 2nd edition to 3rd

I noticed that the cards are on the same quality of paper. Thin but managable, not thick or laminated. They have added some color so its not as boring to look at. (nothing compared to the Lippincott's Microcards: Microbiology Flash Cards by Sanjiv Harpavat and Sahar Nissim, Third Edition

The color helps a tiny bit. The cards have increased from 189 to 230. I havent gone through all of them yet to see what is new. The box is now a flip top which is helpful in case you lose lids (not me)

Only problems I've noticed so far is that Group 6 and Group 7 ( Hematological Agents and Endocrine/Metabolic Agents) have the colored 6 or 7 Tab in the same location. kinda sucks when trying to separate the cards out. Not sure if this is with everyone or just my cards that have this issue.

I will attach a picture that shows the differnce between group 7 header card. They have added more drugs onto each category ( adding ezetimbe, niacin, danazol, anastrozole, tamifloxin clomiphene, levothyroxine.)

Great for reviewing...bad card quality

Just got these cards and they are great for rapid reviewing...like most flashcards. But I wanted to give a heads up that box that holds the cards is very sturdy but the cards themselves are equivalent to my printer paper...super thin and flimsy. I have the Lange Biochemistry and Genetics Flash Cards 2/E (LANGE FlashCards)and they are printed on heavy duty stock cards and I use them a lot with no wear/tear at all. These are gonna get worn out/folded/ripped pretty quickly. It would have been better for me to have gotten these on my kindle instead or maybe to have purchased and older edition. Hope this helps anyone contemplating on purchasing these and G'luck on your exams!

Not perfect, but better than rote memorization

There are occasional errors. For instance, in one question stem they classify "benign prostatic hyperplasia" as "benign prostatic hypertrophy". That's a big problem and certainly could cost you a point on step 1, and to be honest there are 4-5 mistakes like this throughout the cards. However, we are talking about almost 250 flashcards here with a ton of information. The pathological and "real life" tie ins are absolutely necessary for retaining the information and I wouldn't understand pharmacology nearly as well without these cards. To me, the vignettes are well written and they force you to comprehend why/when/how a drug is used. Without the occasional errors, this would be a 5 star product. My suggestion: the first time you go through the cards, have a First Aid handy to verify the content. If you are one of those people who demands a flawless product, maybe these cards aren't for you. But- I've found errors in almost all the review sources for step 1 and these cards are no different. Pathoma, First Aid, DIT- sorry, but they've all got em! Overall, these cards are great.

Best of the best 2014!

Red Heart Dirt by NR Walker is simplicity at it's best. There's no crazy plot twist or high angst but it is so flawlessly written that I couldn't help but fall in love with the story and it's characters. The best way to describe it...you know on those cooking competition shows, when the contestants have to cook an easy dish like eggs over easy. Right off the bat you think- that's nothing but if not executed correctly it's a failure. Well, I don't think everyone would've been successful at writing this book. Ms. Walker did a great job describing the setting and the conditions in which the characters were working in. I felt like I was there.

This book takes place in the Australian Outback. Charlie is the owner of the ranch where Travis travels to further educate himself. Right away the two find an easy friendship that soon develops into more. The characters show great development as the story progresses and I found myself really rooting for things to work out between them. Their story is one of friendship, acceptance, loss, and love.

I'll answer a question I always ask my reading buddies and my reading buddies ask me: Is there steam? My answer: Hells yeah!

The ending of this book- one of favorites- EVER! This is a 5 star read, best of the best for this year!

Welcome to Sutton Station: One of the world’s largest working farms in the middle of Australia – where if the animals and heat don’t kill you first, your heart just might.

Charlie Sutton runs one of the largest working ranches in middle Australia, Sutton Station. It is something he was born to do and Charlie can’t picture himself anywhere else even if he feels his sexuality would make him an outcast not only among the people he works among but the other stations and store owners he does business with as well. The recent death of his powerful, overbearing father has done nothing to still his father’s voice inside his head that threatens his self worth and instills Charlie with a fear about being gay and out. Then a new arrival at the station upends the status quo, including Charlie’s perceptions of himself and the Sutton Station family.

American agronomy student Travis Craig arrives for a work study internship at Sutton Station. Travis feels that his background as a Texas rancher and college area of study will help him fit in while hoping his studies will be beneficial to both countries. While Travis expects to research how the Australian farmers make a living from one of the harshest environments on earth, he doesn’t expect to find that he learns to love not only the harsh beauty and red dirt of Sutton Station but Charlie Sutton himself.

Under the intense desert sun of the red dirt of Sutton Station, can two men find love and the ability to have a future together?

Readers, meet my latest obsession and its author, the Red Dirt Heart series by N. R Walker. All it took was the first paragraph to pull me totally into the life of Charlie Sutton and the Sutton Station set in the Northern Territory (which is about the same size as Lebanon and based on a real working farm). This author is amazing. Walker manages to make the people and places in Red Dirt Heart so believable, so vivid, that you will feel the dust and heat enough to feel the need to brush the red dirt off the pages (or Kindle cover) as you read.

The story is told from Charlie Sutton’s point of view. That perspective enables Walker to bring all the Aussie terminology, colloquialisms, culture and frame of mind to life. It also lets us into the heart and soul of this vulnerable, and marvelously complicated young man. There is so much to Charlie. From the insidious voice inside his head left by his father that tells him he will never be good enough or “man” enough to run Sutton Station because he is gay to the considerate, smart, and appealing person others find him to be. What a great character!

Travis Craig, is his equal in every manner. A Texas agronomy student who is openly gay, Travis starts to upend Charlie’s life and life at the Sutton Station from the moment he arrives. Travis not only works himself into Charlie’s heart but the readers as well. Their dialog together is serious, humorous, and telling in its many meanings and impact.

Every aspect of life at Sutton Station comes across as authentic and real as the red dirt itself. From Ma in the kitchen to the drovers that work for Charlie, the reader is immersed into the every day experiences of life lived seasonally and the hard work it takes to exist and succeed under some of the harshest conditions known. It’s not just the romance but all the layers found here in this story and series that makes it work and resonate deeply with the readers, myself included. I did say it was my newest obsession, didn’t I?

Red Dirt Heart is that amazing self published story that you want to go telling everyone about. I couldn’t put it down and then was lucky enough to already have in my possession the sequel to dive into once the first was finished. And then I wanted more. I wanted to move to Australia, experience the red dirt and vastness of the Northern Territory and wander until I found a Charlie and Travis of my own. Trust me, you are going to feel the same. The third story in the series is almost here. Pick up the first two and get ready to fall in love with Charlie, Travis, and the Sutton Station itself.

Aussie Ranchers!

A story that deals with ranching and Australia,a win win situation in my mind. Having had a life long infatuation with Australia, I was waiting for this book to happen.

Charlie Sutton inherited Sutton Station when his Dad past. The very same who told Charlie there would never be fairy running the Sutton. Well, his Dad was wrong, Charlie runs it, lives it, breathes it, bleeds it. He is an extension of the land the he loves so deeply. Travis Craig, a Texas agriculture student has arrived to see how a living is extracted from one of the harshest environments anywhere on the earth. The young man that all think will be a washout, reacts like he was born to the Sutton. After fighting his attraction to Travis, Charlie gives in knowing that this could be suicide in this part of the world, where gay ranching is an unknown, and probably unwelcomed possibility.

There are very good side characters, such as Ma and George, surrogate parents for Charlie. This book had me from the beginning. I read it when I should have been sleeping. Excited to see there will be a #2.

I give it an Outback full of stars.

Excellent reference for Maternal Fetal Medicine

This is a very thorough and easy to follow text. I have already used it a dozen times since purchasing it a few weeks ago. It is evidence based with up to date references. It covers topics that are not covered as thoroughly in other books. I highly recommend it for general obstetrics and maternal fetal medicine.

Clegg's tight, elegant prose, earnest tone, and meticulous attention to detail call up a fairy tale world brutally transformed into a monstrous hell. While the New York Times Book Review and the Times considered the book tedious and clichéd, their comments appeared to be directed more toward the genre as a whole, whose repetitive descriptions of substance abuse are "amply familiar to anyone who has ever watched a single episode of Behind the Music on VH-1" (Times). Of course, reviewer David Carr has written his own tale of addiction, The Night of the Gun (***1/2 Nov/Dec 2008). Most critics, however, agreed with the Globe and Mail, which called Clegg's unflinching, intelligent, and grim account "a skillfully conjured, slow-motion train wreck from which it's impossible to look away."

Clegg was a partner in a thriving literary agency and was involved in a long-term, loving relationship when he succumbed to cocaine addiction. For two months, he went on a crack binge that emptied his bank account, ruined his business, destroyed his relationship, and nearly took his life. Clegg alternates between recollections of his slow and steady decline into addiction and his youthful discovery that he was gay, humiliated by his father's taunts and his mother's distance. As his addiction escalated, he frantically chased the high, endlessly starting over after binges of drinking and smoking crack, running away from every intervention effort by his family or his lover, indulging in anonymous sex with a string of fellow users. When his disheveled appearance prompts a hotel to reject his attempt to register, he realizes he has fallen into “the purgatory between citizen and nobody, between fine young man and bum” and begins a slow and painful recovery. Surpassed expectations...not one hint of sentimentality

The narrative voice in Clegg's memoir is unusually strong, making it a real page turner. Several times I feared that he would, after some particularly vivid moment in the book, begin to lead the reader up the twelve yawn inducing steps toward recovery. But he seems to have known that choosing such a path in the middle of such a wild descent into hell would result in the kind of cloying, predictable, prostration at the altar of belief, which would have rendered his brilliant observations inert. But I'm happy to say that this never happened. And as good looking as Clegg is, the drug-induced paranoia he navigates had me thanking my lucky stars that I never had the opportunity of getting high with him. I'm eager to see how he handles recovery in his new book, "Ninety Days."

What you like

Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man is one of the best books I have ever read, it grabbed me by the balls and wouldn't let go until the end! Bill Clegg doesn't try to impress us that he is another Proust, but he does impress never-the-less, with honesty and humility, sharing in raw edged and well written detail the degradation of childhood, and dashed successes of adulthood due to drugs. Having had a rugged time of it through much of life, I sought refuge from pain for a time in self-medication--this is not exactly like addiction, but many details are the same. Bill Clegg not only helped me understand myself better but he reminded me I'm not alone, and for those reasons I am very grateful, and look forward to his next book. Some have criticized the quality of the author's writing. I object. They criticized van Gogh in the beginning, his work was not art they said. But they were wrong.

The book, perhaps, was a true account of an addict's spiraling life. However, I'm not sure whether the point was to not do drugs or that all of us have problems. Not everyone deals with their issues by trying to "escape" reality and treating those who love us like dirt.

Not for me

I think this might work best for parents of easy to average children who feel they are in over their head due to their own parents not providing a role model that they care to emulate. It was not for me.

The program borrows from positive discipline and mindfulness acceptance therapy in about equal measure. (i.e. Give two positive choices, accepting the moment as it is and being in control of your reactions.) The book as a whole has a kind of Beatles /Buddhist flavor (ala `All You Need is Love`). There is a strong focus on relationship building, similar to both Greene or Gardener. All of the ideas were familiar, but recombined in an interesting way. The book offered a fresh viewpoint and some new tips for implementing the strategies.

I would describe this as a philosophical approach. Some research is sited. More research is alluded to, but not referenced (i.e. `unnamed research shows that...`). Also, the author is not clear regarding what research clearly shows, vs. conclusions she drew from the research herself, vs. what is more of a `personally held belief, not actually refuted by research I am personally familiar with`. It's similar to Dobson`s _The Strong-Willed Child_ and Greene`s. _The Explosive Child_ in this respect. The author has extensive experience in early childhood education. My understanding is that she has no children of her own.

I liked: Bailey's description of the Flip Flop was just great. I've read about the idea before; this description was the clearest I've seen. Also, her recommendations for being assertive and for staying calm were helpful. These weren't novel ideas, but more strategies to use on the tricky days are more than welcome.

I didn't love: (1) The writing seemed unnecessarily circular and repetitive to me. At one point, I thought I had lost my place (I hadn't.) (2) Bailey seemed to have some strongly held values, and didn't hold back. I wonder if she realized she is ok using praise to encourage characteristics she values (helpfulness, persistence), but is extremely hard on parents who reinforce success, stoicism, or compliance. I don't even disagree very much with her value system, I just found it odd that she didn't seem to realize it was the same general principle. She also had a fairly preachy, there is no such thing as `good enough parenting`, do it my way, or your kids will be in therapy forever tone at times. Which she alternated with, `just love yourself and accept the moment as it is`. I found the combination both irritating and jarring. (3) Finally, she stated her opinion just like it was a fact. I can read a book like that, because I'd take a tip from the devil himself, if it worked and didn't involve hurting anyone else. But I find it almost unbearably annoying.

You, on the other hand, may love this book and find it works beautifully with your child. I'd just recommend trying it at the library before you buy.

I will honestly admit that I started skimming about half way through, the second time Bailey said that chronic noncompliance had only 3 causal factors: Stress, chronic stress from a bad home life, and parents inadvertently reinforcing bad behavior. Which is simply not accurate, in addition to being demoralizing. Most of the experts in the field also talk about temperament (both child and parent), goodness of fit, and underlying disabilities (as well as subclinical issues). I wasn't enjoying the read anyway, and that was it for me. I don't need more of that in my life, I get plenty for free at the grocery store. I did keep a close eye out and double checked the back for citations. Didn't find any additional.

Wish I had this when my 5yr old was 3!

I found myself mad at my 5 year old all the time, and very short tempered around him. It felt like I was always saying 'no' or 'stop that'. It got to the point where I didn't even want to take him anywhere because I didn't want to have to correct him the whole time we were there. In short, I was not having fun being a mom. This book was recommended to me and I started reading it thinking, 'oh my gosh, I do that, is that wrong? Is that why he acts this way? Is that why I act that way?' The book showed me where I had made some poor parenting choices and how re-phrasing things or giving my son real choices he was in charge of could make a big difference. I started changing the way I disciplined him immediately and it has made an immense difference! I've even got my husband to read it because he can see the change in both my son and me. I'm not angry all the time, my son isn't in time-out all the time. We're not fighting about getting dressed and getting in the car, and all the other things that are daily life chores that were once difficult. My style of parenting wasn't working and something had to change. This book made that change happen and has made our house and happier place. Don't get me wrong, there are still hiccups- but it doesn't turn ugly anymore. I only wish that I had known about this book when my son was 3.5 instead of 5, a lot of things could have been avoided!

Amazing Book!

This book has really changed the dynamics of our entire family and how we relate to one another. One youngest is fortunate enough to attend a cutting-edge lab NAEYC accredited lab school where they practice Conscious Discipline. As I watched her those first few months, I realized very quickly that she seemed to be better equipped with social/emotional skills than our oldest... and to some extent her parents! When you watch a toddler go from full-on toddler meltdown to watching her calm herself using deep breathing techniques that many adults can't even do, you start to wonder what this stuff is all about. We all began reading this book - parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles - and it has really helped all of us. People will often stop us and say, "WOW! That was amazing! How did you do that?" or "Can you teach me?" I love that Becky Bailey gives practical, real-life examples throughout the entirety of the book. Every sentence is full of things that you can immediately put to use. There are lots of highlighted sentences in our copies of this book. I've read TONS of parenting books, but none of them come close to this one. In my mind, there is nothing better out there anywhere!
